Mosque Flap Swirls Around Obama, Democrats

Aug. 16, 2010 - There has been intense national reaction to President Obama,s remarks about the building of a mosque in New York. On Sunday's "Face the Nation," Republican strategist Ed Rollins called his statement, "Probably the dumbest thing that any president has said or candidate has said since Michael Dukakis said it was okay to burn the flag."

The uproar caused the President to clarify his position.

"I was not commenting and I will not comment on the wisdom of making the decision to put a mosque there," Obama said. "I was commenting very specifically on the right people have that dates back to our founding."

Editor's note: Legally, the President may be correct, but he could have done the majority of Americans a great favor by giving a presidential opinion that the project is very unwise for many reasons, including the question of the mosques' possible terrorist ties, and the insensitivity to families of the 9/11 victims. Evidently he doesn't agree with the majority.

Aug. 16, 2010 - In spite of the fact that a recent poll showed that 70 percent of US citizens opposed the construction of a mosque near ground zero in New York, President Obama forcefu lly endorsed the project.

"As a citizen, and as president, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as anyone else in this country," Obama said, weighing in for the first time on a controversy that has riven New York City and Americans.

Hamas-linked group has deep ties to White House

Feb. 24, 2010 - Last week, President Obama's top adviser on counter-terrorism, John Brennan, spoke at an event sponsored by the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA).

ISNA is known for its enforcement of Saudi-style Islam in mosques throughout the U.S. It was named by the Justice Department as an unindicted co-conspirator in its case against the Holy Land Foundation in Texas.

Leaders of the The Holy Land Foundation were found guilty in 2008 of raising $12 million for the Hamas terrorist organization. They were given life sentences for their actions.

At President Obama's inauguration ISNA President Ingrid Mattson offered a prayer. She also represented ISNA at Obama's Ramadan dinner at the White House.

Jan. 25, 2010 - A report from Congress' bipartisan Commission on the Prevention of Weapons of Mass Destruction Proliferation and Terrorism claims that Al-Qaeda is extremely patient, waiting for the opportunity to unleash weapons of mass destruction on the U.S. The commission was also critical of the Obama administration's preparation for this threat.

Osama bin Laden says Barack Obama 'planting seeds of hatred'

June 3, 2009 - As President Obama arrives in Egypt, Al Jazeera television played an audio tape from Osama bin Laden. He warned that Obama has planted the seeds of "revenge and hatred" towards the United States in the Muslim world by continuing President Bush's policies.

Al-Qaeda's second-in-command, Ayman al-Zawahri, said in an audio tape posted on an Islamist website on Tuesday that Muslims had already received Mr Obama's "bloody messages", which were pre-empting the US president's charm offensive.

Obama Facing Escalating North Korea Threat With Few Options

May 26, 2009 - World opinion is apparently unanimous against North Korea because of yesterday's nuclear test and launching of missiles. Most think it would be suicide for North Korea to actually use one of their nuclear devices in war, but there is greater concern that their technology may be given or sold to terrorists. Graham Allison, an assistant secretary of defense in the first Clinton administration and now director of the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard University asked:

"Could this guy believe he could sell a nuclear bomb to Osama bin Laden? ...Why not?" It would be easier, he said, than helping Syria construct a nuclear reactor, which the North Koreans are accused of having already done.

On Wednesday, the Senate rebuked Obama's request for funding to close the Guantanamo prison, withholding on a 90-6 vote $80 million that would go to shutting down the facility until the president presents a plan for what to do with the remaining detainees.

While admitting that their acitivites, "have been largely rhetorical and have not indicated plans to carry out violent acts," the report says that those concerned about illegal immigration, increasing federal power, restrictions on firearms, abortion and the loss of U.S. sovereignty may become violent in the future.

The description of "right-wing extremists includes:

Hate groups opposed to particular religions or races

Anti-government groups that reject federal authority in favor of state or local authority

Individuals who are dedicated to a single issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration

Some returning war veterans

Those who believe in "a Jewish-controlled 'one-world government'"

Those who are unhappy about the election of an African-American president and the prospect of his policy changes

Teachers of "end times" prophecies that could motivate extremist individuals and groups to stockpile food, ammunition and weapons

The report, dated April 7, 2009 is titled "Right-wing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment."

Russia will not help because they have built the Iranian nuclear plant and will provide the fuel. China will not help because they need Iran's oil. The next U.S. President will have to do something about this problem. Former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, John Bolton, says that if Israel decides to attack Iran's nuclear facilities, the U.S. will need to help them by providing military equipment.
