Mid-East Conflict 2000

The current unrest in the Middle-East focuses on the civil struggle between the government of Israel and its Palestinian people who want to establish a separate Palestinian state. Most of the Arab and/or Islamic nations in the area are also involved, and the United States, the U.N., the European Union, and even Russia are all trying to broker peace in the region. An American warship, the USS Cole was attacked by suicide bombers in port in Yemen, increasing tensions and possibly implicating terrorists like Osama Bin Laden in Afghanistan.

The current wave of violence could die out and become one of many such cycles in the area, or it could lead to more serious war. The outcome of this war could be a most welcome peace agreement.

A peace agreement might, in turn, either be just another phase in the age-old struggle between these nations, or it could be the treaty predicted in Daniel 9:27, which many prophecy scholars identify as the beginning of the seven-year Tribulation period.

When Israel finally is at peace it will be the first time since they became a nation in 1948 that they have enjoyed such security. This could cause them to lower their guard, which would set the scene for yet another war, such as the one predicted in Ezekiel 38 and 39. (Many good Bible teachers think that war is more likely at the end of the Tribulation, but it does not correspond exactly to the Battle of Armageddon.) If it does come at the beginning of the Tribulation, it will most likely correspond to the 2nd Seal of Revelation 6, which is a great war.

Mideast future hinges on key Arabs
Mar. 20, 2001 - Next week's Arab League Summit in Amman, Jordan, is not likely to ease Mideast tensions. Analysis of the political climate by DEBKAfile intelligence sources indicate that some Arab countries may join forces with the Palestinians against Israel.
DEBKA analysts say the next-most-likely timeframes for violence are April and May-June -- violence could take the form of a wider regional war, depending on whether Arab nations not now directly involved decide to throw in with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and the few Arab leaders willing to back him already.
These alliances could lead to an escalation of the conflict and have a world-wide effect on the economy and political climate. The United States, Russia, and China are deeply involved, financially and militarily, with some of the potential belligerents.

Palestinian kids raised for war
Mar. 17, 2001 - Recent fighting between Israel and the Palestinians have left some 40 Palestinian children dead. This, of course, causes world opinion to turn against Israel, but the awful truth is, that their children are being taught to hate and kill Jews through 'Sesame Street'-type TV shows. Israel on alert for more bombs
Mar. 5, 2001 - Following a gruesome suicide bombing of a crowd of people in Netanya, and the warning that Hamas is prepared with 10 such suicide bombings to be unleashed when newly-elected Prime Minister Sharon takes office, Israeli police are on maximum alert.
Mr Sharon, who has pledged to restore security to Israel after more than five months of fighting with the Palestinians, has blamed Mr Arafat for not doing enough to prevent attacks.
"This attack... shows the Palestinian Authority is not taking the required steps," he said. "We know clearly that forces particularly loyal to Mr Arafat are taking part in these attacks."

A report by the Office of the Arab Boycott of Israel said the Jewish state may have some concerns about its ability to deter aggression by Iran. The report also said Israel, which considers Iran its chief rival in the region, had tested nuclear-capable cruise missiles last year, launching them from three Dolphin-class diesel-electric submarines built by a German shipbuilder.

Palestinians say Sharm summit in four days
The peace summit in Egypt was not cancelled permanently, but called off for a few days so that both sides could have detailed questions answered. Israeli Prime Minister Barak is said to be eager to finish the process.
Palestinian sources said the Palestinians want clarification what kind of Palestinian sovereignty the Americans and Israelis envision concerning the Temple Mount. Palestinian officials said they had told the Americans that they would not agree to cede control over archeological remains underneath.
If the Egyptian meeting is successful, the final round of talks would move to Washington D.C. where President Clinton will participate.

Clinton plan rocks Barak cabinet; Minister raises specter of Israel's 'suicide'
Dec. 27, 2000 - Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak is reluctantly willing to accept President Clinton's peace proposals because, if Israel refuses, most of the nations of the world will consider Israel unreasonable and increase their isolation.
Several ministers have expressed dismay over Clinton's bridging proposals that would end Israeli rule over virtually the entire West Bank and Gaza Strip and eastern Jerusalem, including the Temple Mount, holy to both Jews and Muslims. The plan also calls for a corridor that would link the West Bank and Gaza Strip as well as the transfer of territory within Israel's pre-1967 borders.

Israel awaits Arafat's answer to Clinton
Dec. 26, 2000 - President Clinton's last-resort conditions for a peace plan will put great pressure on Israel if Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat agrees to them. Arafat is studying the proposals now.
If both the Palestinians and the Israelis accept the proposal, an Israeli source said, the next move will be for Barak and Arafat to hold separate meetings with Clinton, possibly as early as the end of this week, in Washington. If those talks progress well, then a three-way summit to flesh out the final obstacles could be held the following week.
Clinton has set January 10 as the final deadline for coming to an agreement under his watch.

Israel ready to accept 1967 line as border basis
Dec. 22, 2000 - With a target date of January 10 for a peace settlement, fragile hopes are built on Israeli negotiators' apparent willingness to return to the basic borders that existed before the 1967 war. Slight differences are proposed to allow Israel's access to parts of the Old City of Jerusalem and the Temple Mount, and its annexation of a few Jewish settlements. Equivalent land area would be traded so that Arafat could claim 100% of the land lost in 1967.
Israel has also agreed to the general concept of giving the Palestinians sovereignty over Arab East Jerusalem and religious sites holy to Islam and Christianity, including the flashpoint Temple Mount, which Israel captured in the 1967 war.

Child sacrifice is Palestinian paganism
Oct. 27, 2000 - According to Jerusalem Post reporter Gerald M. Steinberg, some 40 Palestinian children have been killed in the current violence in Israel. The Palestinian strategy has been to train and place them on the front line of the conflict, where danger is the greatest, and laud them as martyrs for the cause.
In an unbelievably shocking scene, one mother boasted that she bore her son precisely for this purpose, and the father proudly claimed credit for providing the training. The parents will also receive a sizeable financial "reward" from the Palestinian Authority.
The death of the children has provided a great propaganda advantage for Palestinians as the pictures of the slain youth are plastered on front pages of the news. However, many are beginning to compare this to ancient practices of child sacrifice and are asking what kind of people will allow such a thing.

Oct. 17, 2000 - A cease-fire agreement has emerged from the summit at Sharm el-Sheikh. Israel and the Palestinians are both satisfied with the terms, but unclear details left lingering uncertainty. Both sides agreed to issue public statements calling for an end to violence and take steps to end clashes in the region and restore the areas of conflict to their status prior to the recent crisis. Palestinian areas closed by Israeli forces would be reopened, as would the airport in Gaza. The United States will assist with security operations “as needed.”

A “committee of fact-finding” would be set up to determine the root causes of the recent violence. Participants would include the United States and United Nations, as well as Israel and the Palestinians.
