Bush to Back Out of '72 Nuclear Pact
Dec. 12, 2001 - President Bush has announced plans to withdraw from the 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty. He will invoke a clause in the treaty that says that either the U.S. or Russia may end the treaty after giving six months notice. It was originally designed to inhibit testing of defense systems to enforce the cold war concept that being defenseless would deter both sides from launching an attack, since retaliation would be disastrous. The U.S. wants to test new defenses, including future space-based systems, to protect our country against the possibility of attacks by rogue nations.

BBC: Palestinian group says responsible for WTC attack
Note: The Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine has claimed responsibility for the attacks on the World Trade Center, but it is unlikely that Palestinians have the means for such a massive and successful operation. Israel evacuates embassies, Palestinians celebrate

NEW YORK, Sept. 11 — Two aircraft slammed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center on Tuesday, causing one to collapse, while another aircraft hit part of the Pentagon. The Pentagon, the West Wing of the White House and the Capitol building were being evacuated. In addition, the FAA grounded all civilian aircraft nationwide. President Bush called the tragedies “an apparent terrorist attack on our country.” September 11 — A plane collides with World Trade Center Tower 1 on Tuesday, some eighteen minutes after a first plane struck the other tower. NBC’S JIM MIKLASEWSKI, reporting from the Pentagon, said eyewitnesses saw a third aircraft crash into part of the Pentagon. In New York, the aircraft struck minutes apart, starting fires and sending smoke billowing out of the skyscrapers. The first crash happened shortly before 9 a.m. ET. MSNBC.com reporter Martin Wolk, who was inside one of the towers, said the lights flickered and then a loud bang was heard. People panicked and started to flee the building. When they reached the lobby, smoke started to fill the building and people could see debris falling and many cars outside were damaged. “It was sheer pandemonium, people were screaming and crying, afraid to go outside because of the falling debris,” Wolk said. “We looked up and it looked like the top 20 floors were in flames.” Another bystander described a barrage of debris raining down on the sidewalk below.

Shortly after 9 a.m., a second aircraft was seen crashing into the other tower. Broadcast cameras already watching the scene filmed the second plane as it slammed into the tower and exploded in a huge fireball. A half hour later, President Bush made a brief statement to reporters, calling the disaster a “national tragedy” and attributing it to terrorists. He did not cite any specific terrorist groups. In the wake of the crashes, New York airports and the Lincoln Tunnel were closed as precautionary measures. The stock exchanges in New York also did not open. Large holes were visible in sides of the 110-story buildings. The tops of the twin towers were obscured by the smoke. Thousands of pieces of what appeared to be office paper came drifting over Brooklyn, about three miles from the tower, one witness said. In an earlier terrorist attack, the center was bombed on Feb. 26, 1993, killing six people and injured more than 1,000 others. Terrorist Ramzi Yousef and three others were convicted of orchestrating the attack. Three other indicted co-conspirators remain at large. The FBI said it was investigating reports of a hijacking. A United Airlines employee said he had heard reports that an American Airlines jet had been hijacked and was one of the two aircraft that flew into the center. Sources told NBC’s Andrea Mitchell that the jet was flying from Boston to Los Angeles when it apparently was hijacked. Traffic entering New York City from New Jersey was at a standstill approaching the Holland Tunnel as motorists stood outside their cars watching the fire. In Chicago, the Sears Trade tower was being evacuated as well.

US lawmakers warned of "dark winter" in case of bioterrorist attack
July 24, 2001 - US lawmakers saw a presentation Monday by security experts, who warned that a biological terrorist attack on US soil could bring the country to the brink of disintegration.
The presentation, code-named "Dark Winter," which featured a computer-simulated bioterrorist attack on three US states. It used a series of fabricated newscasts to show how about two dozen people infected with smallpox in Oklahoma could escalate into one million deaths and three million more infected in less than two months. The outbreak could lead to marshal law and the break-down of governmental services.

Bush Shows Foreign Policy Muscles in Brussels
June 14, 2001 - In his first presidential visit to Europe, George W. Bush seems to have made progress with NATO leaders. He stood firm on US committment to a missile defense program, but insisted that it would be done in consultation with U.S. allies and Russia.
Time's Brussels bureau chief James Graff reports:
And it has to be noted that despite considerable skepticism over missile defense, there has been some movement on the issue by the Europeans. Missile defense has ceased to be a yes-or-no question, becoming a question of degree and balance. The Europeans are increasingly prepared to acknowledge that there are new security questions to be addressed, but how those are addressed remains an open question.

Unrepentant McVeigh is executed
June 11, 2001 - After a one-month delay, Timothy McVeigh was executed this morning by lethal injection, bringing some closure to the country's worst terrorist activity, the bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City six years ago. The execution took place in Terre Haute, Ind.
McVeigh did not speak before he died, but gave Lappin a handwritten copy of the 1875 poem “Invictus,” by British author William Ernest Henley to pass on to media witnesses, including the lines: “I am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soul.”

Global space race heats up
May 23, 2001 - An independent military space force is planned to begin June 1 in Russia to combine all Russian military space programs and commercial space ventures.
The re-establishment of a Russian Space Force is only a first step toward the re-emergence of Russia as a military space power, but it comes as the Pentagon revives its own interest in space-based warfare. In fact, the Russian moves effectively justify U.S. plans to maintain a lead in space. Russia's actions will accelerate the ongoing space race -- both military and commercial -- involving America, Europe and Asia.

"The kind of incident we have just been through does not advance a constructive relationship between our countries."

Apr. 2, 2001 - A Chinese military jet collided with a U.S. Navy EP-2 spy plane yesterday over international waters near China. The Chinese plane crashed, but crew members apparently survived. The U.S. plane suffered minor damage and was forced to land at Lingshui on Hainan Island.
The Chinese claimed the U.S. plane rammed their plane, while U.S. Admiral Dennis Blair said it was China's fault for being too aggressive. "It's not a normal practice to play bumper cars in the air," he said.
It appears that the Chinese intend to hold the crew members while they conduct negotiations with the U.S.
This morning, 3 U.S. warships are headed toward the island, showing that the U.S. takes the matter very seriously. If the Chinese detain the crew or the plane it would be a violation of international law.

Manufacturing Armageddon - Technologies for the Apocalypse ?
Feb. 10, 2001 - This is a fascinating article by Tom Horn about tiny, deadly flying machines which are being designed to assist in warfare of the future.
He quotes Jim Wilson from the February issue of Popular Mechanics:
Micro air vehicles (MAVs) represent one of the most fantastic opportunities for military surveillance and weapons delivery. "When perfected," Wilson points out, "Fearing's stainless steel and Mylar robot flies will be able to flap their way into the most secret places on Earth--the bunkers where Saddam Hussein plans his genocidal campaigns, and where Chinese spymasters plot their raids on America's nuclear weapons laboratories."
Other examples are given. Small explosives or other deadly cargo can be delivered with pin-point accuracy!

Conflict in 2000 was up significantly over 1999, when the total count was 65. Overall, the 68 conflicts listed for 2000 represent one of the highest totals in the history of the report (see chart below). Generally speaking, the level of conflict globally is far higher than at the end of the Cold War, when the total was about 35. The stability of the bipolar Cold War system has clearly been replaced by a series of warm wars being fought at the low-intensity level.

Russian missile scandal prompts Hill 'outrage'
Aug. 22, 2000 - A congressional investigation has been requested regarding the failure of the Clinton administration to purchase Russian missiles when they were offered. The Navy has released documents showing that a 1995 offer from Russia to purchase their advanced SS-N-22 ("Sunburn") supersonic cruise missles was declined. This is the most effective anti-ship missile in the world, and one against which we have no effective defense.
"The Sunburn combines a Mach 2.5 speed with a very low-level flight pattern that uses violent end maneuvers to throw off defenses. After detecting the Sunburn, the U.S. Navy Phalanx point defense system may have only 2.5 seconds to calculate a fire solution -- not enough time before the devastating impact of a 750-lb. warhead."
Sunburn missiles are also employed by the Chinese on their new Sovremenny-class destroyer is equipped with eight of the nuclear-tipped Russian anti-ship missiles. The missile can have a nuclear warhead equal to over 200,000 tons of TNT.

In a new book, "Red Dragon Rising," co-author, William Triplett, says China will deploy nuclear-tipped missiles on two Russian-built Sovremenny-class destroyers, which are warships "designed to start a nuclear war." Each ship has eight nuclear-tipped, Russian-made Moskit anti-ship missiles which are armed with nuclear warheads equal to over 120,000 tons of TNT -- six times more powerful than the bomb dropped on Hiroshima at the end of World War II. The ship has no ability to hide. It would only be useful as a first-strike vehicle which would launch it's deadly cargo and then die.

Al-Jazeerah television, monitored by the BBC in Jordan, said the two planes landed at two airports around Islamabad. It said dozens of U.S. military commandos took up combat positions near the planes and barred anyone from approaching the area.
Al-Jazeerah reported that the operation was in apparent preparation for a military strike against Bin Laden. Bin Laden has been accused by the United States of having responsibility for the bombing of the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania a year ago that killed at least 226 people, including 12 Americans.
