Israel/Lebanon War

Israel is already involved in military conflict with the Palestinians' Hamas faction in the Gaza area. Now they have been attacked by rockets launched by Hezbollah militants in the southern part of Lebanon. Hezbollah killed Israei soldiers and civilians, and took two soldiers captive. It is believed that Hezbollah has more than 1500 rockets aimed at Israeli targets. The Israeli Defense Force (IDF) responded by entering Lebanon with tanks, by blockading their ports to cut off oil and other supplies, and by bombing some of their infrastructure, including the Beruit airport and the road that connects Beirut with Damascus Syria. The Lebanese government seems to be either unwilling or unable to stop the attacks and return the soldiers. The war escalated when Hezbollah rockets reached the Israeli port city of Haifa for the first time, and an Iranian-made missle damaged an Israeli warship off the coast of Lebanon.

War Between Israel and the Palestinians

The smaller conflict between Israel and the Palestinians has been serious enough, with years of violence, which could either lead to a peace agreement and a period of relative tranquility, or to a more serious war involving Israel's Arab neighbors.

World War III?

The greater danger, especially since 9-11 and the War on Terror, is that the Islamic world will band together to fight against Israel and its support base, the United States. It is well known that Iran is the sponsor of Hezbollah. Syria is also behind these terrorist groups. Iran is close to creating nuclear weapons, and Russia, their long-time ally is reluctant to impose sanctions on them. This allignment is predicted in the Old Testament book of Ezekiel, chapters 38 and 39. While some Biblical scholars equate this future war with the Battle of Armageddon (at the end of the Tribulation Period), or Satan's last stand after the thousand-year reign of Christ (Revelation 20), it is more likely the same as the world war of Revelation's Second Seal (Revelation 6:3-4 - at the beginning of the Tribulation).

It does seem that a short period of peace in Israel would occur before the war of Ezekiel 38 and 39. This would be the false peace of 1 Thessalonians 5:3. While people are saying, "Peace and safety," destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. (NIV)

Hopefully, this escalation can be brought under control. The nations of the world will do their best to keep it from reaching a full-scale war.

U.N. Security Council Approves Cease-Fire Resolution

Aug. 12, 2006 - A resolultion to implement a cease-fire between Israel and Hezbollah has been approved by the U.N. Security Council. It authorized 15,000 U.N. peacekeepers to help Lebanese troops take control of south Lebanon, and calls for the withdrawal of Israeli troops. The timing of the cease-fire was not specified. Israel will be permitted to continue any "defensive" military operations. An unconditional release of the abducted Israeli soldiers is part of the agreement. U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice played a major role in the diplomacy that led to the resolution. She issued an invitation to other nations to respect the terms of the agreement.
"Today we call upon every state, especially Iran and Syria, to respect the sovereignty of the Lebanese government and the will of the international community," Rice told the council. Iran and Syria back Hezbollah and supply it rockets and other weapons.
The resolution must now be considered by Israel, Lebanon, and Hezbollah during the next few days. Each party will need to agree for the plan to go into effect.

‘12th Imam,’ key facet of Islamic prophecy, fueling Middle East turmoil, experts say

Aug. 7, 2006 - Muslims also believe in a Messiah who is to come. They call him Mahdi, and the Shiite branch of Islam believes he is Mohammed ibn Hasan, the 12th in the line of imams who were descendents of the prophet Mohammed. Mohammed ibn Hasan was born in 868 A.D., and they believe God placed him into hiding until the day of judgment.
Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has been cited by various news sources as not only believing in the eventual return of the Mahdi, but that the return is near and that it is the responsibility of the Iranian government to prepare the country for his return.
Some Muslims believe that Jesus is the Madhi, and when he comes he will prove that Islam is the true religion.
