Rumors: Segway isn't really Ginger
Aug. 21, 2002 - Comparison of the Segway people-mover with the original information about the revolutionary "Ginger" invention causes some people to think that there is something more coming - possibly even a personal hovercraft.

Long-awaited IT Invention Is A People-mover
Dec. 3, 2001 - Ending a year of speculation about the nature of a mysterious, life-changing invention, celebrated inventor, Dean Kampen, unveiled the device this morning on the "Good Morning America" program.
"This is the world's first self-balancing human transporter," Kamen said. "You stand on this Segway Human Transporter and you think forward and then you go forward. If you think backward, you go backward."
The two-wheeled personal transportation device is designed to carry one person in congested areas where automobiles are not practical. Hundreds of people have been working on this project for years. It contains gyroscopes to help the rider keep his balance, and sophisticated sensors and computers to respond to the body's normal positioning for walking. It is battery operated, can travel up to 17 miles per hour, and has a range of 17 miles before recharging. Commercial versions will begin shipping very soon, and consumer models may be available in about a year at an anticipated price of $3000.

The Big Mystery - January 2001

The scientific world is abuzz with reports of a fabulous new invention that has the potential to change the world. The inventer is Dean Kamen, the well-known creator of many important devices, founder of FIRST - an organization of inventors, president of DEKA, a successful company, and recipient of the National Medal of Technology, the country's highest such award. Kamen is highly respected as the inventor of a portable dialysis machine, the robochair that climbs stairs, and a revolutionary motor that creates energy and purifies water.

A book is being written about this wonderful device. Steve Kemper, a well-known journalist, has sold the rights to the book to the prestigious Harvard Business School Press for $250,000.

The amazing thing is that the publisher does not even know what this world-changing invention is! For that matter, neither do the host of technical writers who are announcing it. And the inventor doesn't plan to reveal the secret until sometime in 2002.

What is known is that a few key technology figures and investors have bought into the plan and can hardly contain their enthusiasm. Steve Jobs, for example, says that people will want to build cities around the concept. Influential Silicon Valley venture capitalist John Doerr, is one of many financiers to approve of the project.

The device is called "IT" and goes by the code name Ginger. Educated guesses are being made, based on the inventor's past track record and known patents. One of the most popular theories is that it is a personal mobility device, possibly even a small hover craft or magnetic levitation vehicle.

If it does turn out to be a fast, clean, inexpensive method of transportation, it would give new meaning to the Biblical prophecy of Daniel 12:4. "But you, Daniel, close up and seal the words of the scroll until the time of the end. Many will go here and there to increase knowledge." (NIV)

We will track the progress of this new development as it unfolds.

Teleportation no longer a myth
Jan. 31, 2001 - The science of teleportation, a component of quantum physics, is still at the earliest stages, but according to Anton Zeilinger, professor of experimental physics at Vienna University, work is making progress in that area. So far, only photons have been teleported or recreated remotely, but experiments are moving to the atom and even the molecule next.

Will 'IT' change your life?
Jan. 12, 2001 - BBC reporters weigh in on Dean Kamen's IT -- a top secret invention is backed by some of the biggest names in the American business world, and is said to be more important than the internet. It could be mega-hype, but the players are serious and successful people. Many people have ideas about what it could be...
Could IT be a 21st century C5? The smart money is on IT being a new mode of transport, a theory strengthened by Mr Kamen's work on the IBOT and his penchant for commuting by helicopter.

Report: 'IT,' a Hydrogen Scooter
Mar. 6, 2001 - Corporate surveillance experts have revealed that "IT" is a hydrogen-powered scooter, an emission-free vehicle.
`Ginger represents the first generation of a new mode of transportation that will compete with and possibly replace automobiles. The ramifications of a 'hydrogen economy' would be profound on everything from the environment to the energy business to global politics,''

Stirling Engine
Jan. 9, 2000 - From: Breakout Artist - Wired magazine September 2000 issue
The device is called the Stirling engine; Kamen hopes it can be developed into an affordable, portable machine that will run a water purifier/power generator that could zap contaminated H20 with a UV laser to make it safe for drinking. "It can burn any fuel, and you can do all kinds of things with it," he says. "It might be very valuable in emerging economies, giving them access to electricity, even the Net."
