Bomb wrecks top Jakarta hotel

Aug. 5, 2003 - A bomb has exploded at the Marriott Hotel in Jakarta, Indonesia, killing at least 13 people and injuring many others.
Indonesian Defence Minister Matori Abdul Jalil said it was caused by a bomb and was "clearly an act of terrorism".

Religious Cleansing

April 15, 2003 - Threats and attacks by Muslim extremists in Indonesia have reportedly driven out 600,000 Christians from various portions of the nation during the past three years. Western tourists are also a target. Last year the group called Jemaah Islamiyah attacked a Bali nightclub, killing 190 people. The group was also involved in church bombings that killed 19 people on Christmas Eve 2000.

Oct. 21, 2002 - The two largest Muslim organizations in Indonesia have said that Indonesia's quickly-enacted anti-terrorism law is a good thing.

Indonesia links al-Qaida to bombing
Oct. 15, 2002 - According to Indonesia's Defense Minister, local terrorists assisted al-Qaida to bomb a night club in the resort area of Bali. More than 180 people were killed, and over 300 injured in the attack. Victims included many Indonesians and tourists from Australia, Britain, the Netherlands, France, Germany and Ecuador. Two Americans were killed and three injured.
No one claimed responsibility for the bombing on Kuta Beach. Suspicion, however, immediately turned to al-Qaida and an affiliated group, Jemaah Islamiyah, which is said to want a pan-Islamic state across Malaysia, Indonesia and the southern Philippines.

Al Qaeda network believed thriving in Indonesia
July 30, 2002 - Al Qaeda fugitives have established cells in many countries of Southeast Asia, and Islamic militants hope to one day form a Muslim super-country including Indonesia, Malaysia, the southern Philippines, and southern Thailand. Zachary Abuza, a political scientist and director of the Asia program at Simmons College in Massachusetts, says that the largest cell is in Malaysia, but Indonesia may become an even greater threat.
"New ties between Indonesia and al Qaeda are being uncovered at an alarming rate," his report says. "Until Indonesia begins to get serious about the threat of terrorism, it will remain al Qaeda's next great frontier.

Papuan Christians Fear Onslaught in Indonesia
July 2, 2002 - Papua (Irian Jira) is 70% Christian, while the rest of Indonesia is overwhelmingly Muslim. The radical Islamic group Laskar Jihad is flooding into the province, and is establishing military training camps. Local officials who are opposed to talk of independence for the area are encouraging the influx. Christians believe that a violent campaign could be unleashed against them later this year.

June 6, 2002 - A bus bombing in Central Sulewesi, Indonesia, has claimed the lives of 17 people, including a pastor and his 17 year old daughter.

From the Ashes of Jihad, a Harvest of Souls
June 5, 2002 - 10,000 Christians have been killed in Indonesia by Muslim extremists since 1999, and some 600,000 are homeless.
But persecution has not extinguished the Christian church in the Maluku Islands. Instead, [missionary groups] report a time of harvest. During the last 15 months, they have seen 8,000 Indonesians give their lives to Jesus Christ.

East Timor gears up for independence
May 17, 2002 - East Timor will celebrate it's independence from Indonesia two days from now. As the UN peacekeepers depart, the new country will enjoy a huge celebration. Kofi Annan, Bill Clinton, and Indonesia's president Megawati will participate.
East Timor is 90% Roman Catholic.
