Is there really an increase in seismic activity? From some perspectives it certainly seems that there is, but scientists remind us that this could also be due to the increased effectiveness in measuring and reporting events. In any case, there is no doubt that this period of time qualifies as a fulfillment of the prophecy that "there will be earthquakes!"
Feb. 22, 2005 - Early reports from a strong earthquake (6.4 magnitude) in southern Iran indicate that at least 500 people have been killed. The quake was centred near Zarand in Kerman province, 460 miles from the capital, Tehran.
Some 30,000 people in about 40 villages spread over a wide, mountainous area have been affected.
Dec. 31, 2004 - With the death toll rising above 124,000, tens of thousands of others still missing, and some 5 million survivors at risk from dehydration, starvation and disease, the world is trying to rush aid to the vast areas affected. Major donations so far:
Dec. 30, 2004 - New figures from Indonesia's Island of Sumatra, closest to the giant earthquake, show 28,000 more dead so far.
Some 60 percent of Banda Aceh, the main city in northern Sumatra was destroyed, the U.N. children's agency estimated, and 115 miles of the island's northwest coast — lined with villages — was inundated.
Indonesia's death toll is the highest, with estimates of 80,000, Sri Lanka reported 24,700 dead, India more than 7,300 and Thailand around 2,400. Thailand's prime minister said he feared the toll would go to 6,800. Casualties are also reported from Malaysia, Myanmar, Bangladesh, the Maldives, Somalia, Tanzania and Kenya.
Dec. 29, 2004 - Asian countries are beginning to receive aid, burying their dead, and trying to ward off disease in the wake of the huge quake and tidal waves. The death toll is still growing, and nearing the 70,000 figure.
According to Robert Bazell, NBC's chief science correspondent, controlling disease will now be the greatest challenge.
“There is a shortage of clean water and an enormous amount of water left behind. That’s a recipe for disaster from diseases such as cholera and typhoid, which are spread by fecal material that gets into the water,”
Dec. 28, 2004 - Eleven countries have now reported deaths from the huge earthquake and tsunamis. The death count is now set at 44,000, and the search is continuing. The U.N. says the relief effort will be the biggest ever seen.
More than 18,700 people died in Sri Lanka, more than 4,000 in India and more than 1,500 in Thailand, with numbers expected to rise. The Indonesian vice president's estimate that his country's coastlines held up to 25,000 victims brought the potential toll up to 50,000.
Millions remained homeless. The disaster will probably be the most costly in history - "many billions of dollars."
Dec. 27, 2004 - Tidal waves from yesterday's massive earthquake under the Indian Ocean near Indonesia travelled more than 500 mph before striking the coasts of various countries in the area. The death toll is nearly 23,000 and still climbing. Sri Lanka was hardest hit, reporting 12,029 deaths so far.
Indonesia and India also each reported thousands dead, and Thailand said hundreds were dead there. Deaths also were reported in Malaysia, the Maldives, Myanmar, Bangladesh and even in Somalia, 3,000 miles away in Africa.
Dec. 26, 2004 - A 9.0 earthquake, the strongest in 40 years, struck near Indonesia, causing massive dammage and triggering tidal waves that have taken thousands of lives all over SouthEast Asia, and even on the coast of Somalia in Africa. The death toll is nearing 14,000 and still climbing.
More than one million people were driven from their homes in Indonesia alone, and rescuers there on Monday combed seaside villages for survivors. The Indian air force used helicopters to rush food and medicine to stricken seashore areas.
Sri Lanka was especially hard hit by the flooding. Another million people were displaced there.
Sept. 29, 2004 - A 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck central California at 10:15 am PDT yesterday. It was felt along a 350-mile stretch from San Francisco to below Los Angeles. There have been more than 160 aftershocks so far.
The quake was centered about seven miles southeast of Parkfield, a town of 37 people known as California's earthquake capital. The town is one of the world's most seismically active areas, located on the San Andreas Fault.
Sept. 29, 2004 - Mt. St. Hellen, which erupted in 1980, is experiencing approximately one earthquake per minute.
Scientists are trying to figure out what is going on beneath the 925-foot-high dome of hardened lava within the mountain's gaping crater. They want to know whether the quakes are the result of water seeping into the mountain or magma.
Feb. 25, 2004 -
A 6.5 earthquake struck northern Morocco early Tuesday in villages around Al Hoceima, an area of between 300,000 and 400,000 people. At least 564 people are known dead from the disaster. Hopes dimmed of finding any more people alive in the rubble of mud-brick homes.
Jan. 3, 2004 - In addition to the deadly quake in Iran, claiming more than 30,000 lives, numerous other quakes are shaking the "Ring of Fire." Scientists are trying to determine what it means.
Dec. 31, 2003 - Bitter cold and the spread of disease are primary concern as humanitarian aid arrives in Iran. The Iranian government has again upped the death toll from its recent earthquake to 30,000 with fears the final number could approach 50,000!
Dec. 29, 2003 - Hope is fading for others still trapped in the rubble of Bam's 6.6 quake. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, promised Monday that the ruined historic city will be rebuilt.
Dec. 28, 2003 - The devastating toll from Iran's latest quake is a reminder to Israelis that they too live in a high risk area -- along the great rift (The Jordan valley, leading to the Dead Sea), where some experts say a small earthquake is always happening! A strong quake there could destroy buildings in Jerusalem and throughout Israel. This is a special concern since a recent report shows that the building codes in Israel are not very strict.
According to The Jerusalem Post Sunday, the report found "that the entire system of construction in Israel is flawed to its core, and recommends sweeping changes in the industry…"
Dec. 27, 2003 - International aid and rescue teams are arriving in Iran following yesterday's 6.6 magnitude quake.
Estimates of the death toll range from 10,000 to 25,000 after a major quake hit the historic city of Bam on Friday.
Countries that have pledged aid or dispatched rescue teams to the area, include the UK, Turkey, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, France and Russia. President Bush has offered help from the US, and Iraq officials have said they would accept it.
Dec. 26, 2003 -
TEHRAN, Iran - A severe earthquake devastated the southeastern Iranian city of Bam on Friday, leveling more than half the city's houses and its historic mud-brick fortress. A preliminary estimate said the death toll could reach 10,000.
Dec. 21, 2003 - Scientists predict a "mega-thruster" earthquake could strike the Seattle area. They say it could suffer a magnitude 9 quake, shaking the region 10 times more violently than San Francisco's famous 1906 quake and for 12 times longer.
May 22, 2003 - A 6.7 magnitude earthquake near the Capital of Algiers in Algeria has caused massive collapse of buildings. At this time, at least 770 people have died and 4,700 have been injured.
