Stem cell breakthrough uses no embryos
Nov. 20, 2007 - Two teams of scientists, one in Japan, and the other in the US, have succeeded in producing stem cells from human skin tissue. The process is not yet safe for generating replacement organs, but the development is being called "a tremendous scientific milestone ." And, of course it is much more acceptable than the use of human embryos.

Religion meets science at Vatican's major stargazers' conference

- More than 200 scientists from 26 countries including the United States, Britain, Italy, Germany, Russia, and Japan have gathered in Rome for a five-day meeting on disc galaxies.
At the Papal University in Rome, Jesuit Brother Guy Consolmagno, curator of one of the world's most important collections of meteorites, explains why the Vatican would fund such a gathering. He said, "They want the world to know that the Church isn't afraid of science."

Sept. 28, 2007 - Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed is a movie slated for release next February. It explores the debate between the new "Intelligent Design" movement and the university professors who crush any fellow scientists who dare question evolution. Veteran actor and commentator Ben Stein stars in the documentary. He asks the key question:

Poll: Most Republicans Reject Evolution
June 13, 2007 - A new Gallup poll shows that 68 percent of Republicans do not believe in the theory of evolution. Among Democrats, 57 percent do believe in evolution.
- At the GOP's first presidential debate last month, the 10 candidates were asked which of them did not believe in evolution. Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and Colorado Rep. Tom Tancredo raised their hands.

Replica of Noah's Ark Opens Doors to Visitors
Apr. 30, 2007 - Dutch creationist Johan Huibers has built a replica of Noah's Ark in Schagen, Netherlands. He and his son constructed the project with cedar and pine wood using modern tools.
- Reckoning by the old biblical measurements, Johan's fully functional ark is 150 cubits long, 30 cubits high and 20 cubits wide. That's two-thirds the length of a football field and as high as a three-story house.

Research: God did speak the world into existence?
Feb. 12, 2007 - Samuel J. Hunt, a science student in Kentucky has written a book called Episteme Scientia, The Law Of All That Is. It attempts to show that the construction of everything in the universe begins with a) the Holy Spirit (magnetic field); b) Light (an electric field); and c) that Light can be created by a sonic influence or sound."
- Researchers at institutions no less than UCLA and the University of Chicago have verified the production of light from bubbles when sound is passed through a liquid, called sonoluminescence.
Some of his teachers disagree, but others say his theories are pretty interesting.

Is This Noah’s Ark?
June 19, 2006 - Christian explorer Bob Cornuke has led an expedition to a mountain range in Iran, which he believes is the real Mt. Ararat. They took samples of huge hand-hewn logs from a man-made structure that is the right size for Noah's Ark.
- Five of the nine samples taken from the vessel were confirmed as petrified wood, some of which had sea fossils contained within at 13,100 feet in the Ararat mountain range in Northern Iran.
The Ark is in an avalanche that has been covered up by ice and snow for a long time. Last year, record high temperatures melted the snow and ice to reveal the Ark.

Seminary Appoints Creationist to Head Theology & Science Ctr
May 12, 2006 - Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky has been the home of one of the leading ID theorist, Dr. William Dembski. Dr. Kurt Wise, a "young earth" creationist will replace him as the new director of their Center for Theology and Science. Surprisingly, Dr. Wise received his doctoral degree in paleontology at Harvard under the advisement of famous evolutionist Dr. Stephen Jay Gould.

‘Missing link’ claim for fossils debunked by creationist group
Apr. 11,2006 - David Menton, biomedical research technician at the Mayo Clinic, says that the newly-found specimen, "Tiktaalik" is neither an amphibian or a reptile. Menton, representing "Answers In Genesis," holds a Ph.D. in cell biology from Brown University.
- Tiktaalik, Menton said, is not unique in having these bones because other lobe-fish, such as “coelacanth” fish, also have them.
Furthermore, none of the lobe-fin fish, including Tiktaalik, have bones attaching their fins to the axial skeleton, and it is unlikely that these limbs would be weight-bearing since the fins that are attached are delicate.

Astronomers find DNA-like nebula near center of Milky Way
Mar. 15, 2006 - Using NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, U.S. astronomers spotted a nebula with unprecedented complexity, shaped like a double helix strand of DNA. It is 80 light years in length, and is relatively close to the enormous black hole at the center of the Milky Way.

The Catholic Church Embraces Evolution
Nov. 14, 2005 - Last week Cardinal Paul Poupard, head of the Pontifical Council for Culture sought to harmonize the Bible and evolution. He said that "if the Bible were read correctly" the Genesis description of how God created the universe and Darwin's theory of evolution were "perfectly compatible." He implied that fundamentalists who were were embracing "Intelligent Design" were ignoring the findings of science.

Oct. 18, 2005 - Dr. Michael Behe, biochemistry professor at Lehigh University and author of "Darwin's Black Box," told the court in Harrisburg that evolution should be included in school curriculum since it is widely used in science and that "any well-educated student should understand it."

‘Intelligent design’ faces first big court test
Sept. 23, 2005 - In Harrisburg, PA, a court battle begins today, in which parents challenge the decision by the Dover Area School District to instruct students that evolution is not a fact, but a theory, and that "Intelligent Design" is another possible explanation of life. The ACLU has joined the parents in their efforts to reverse the school board’s decision. The scientific basis of Intelligent Design will be attacked, but at a more basic level, the suit will try to show that the new teaching is really religion in disguise. Eugenie Scott, executive director of the National Center for Science Education believes that the case will have a significant impact on the future of American public school education.
- This will be the first legal challenge to intelligent design, and we’ll see whether they have been able to mask the creationist underpinnings and basic orientation of intelligent design.

June 10, 2005 -The National Academies, an organization of private organizations that promote science and technology, has added a new section of its website to try to help teachers counteract the impact that intelligent design is having on the evolution debate.

intelligent design are resorting to mudslinging. A memo suggests that anti-evolutionists should be
portrayed as political opportunists, Evangelical activists, ignoramuses, breakers of rules, and
unprincipled bullies.
Dr. John West of the Seattle-based Discovery Institute says the opponents of intelligent
design have been saying that true scientists don't challenge Darwin's theory.

May 4, 2005 - The Kansas State Board of Education begins hearings on Thursday to determine whether or not to change the state science standards.

Advocates of change say that the concepts of Creationism or of "Intelligent Design" should at least be taught as alternatives to the theory of evolution.
