People often ask whether or not a certain popular person on the world scene could be the prophesied Antichrist. In a sense, any powerful and charismatic person could be Antichrist. For that reason, people have suggested that most American Presidents in our generation might be that ruler of the predicted final one-world government. The Bible tells us that we can not know who Antichrist will be until the Holy Spirit, the One who holds back sin, has been taken away, presumably by the Rapture. People may have suspicions about one person or another, but they can not know for sure who he will be until that time.

In 2 Thessalonians 2:1-8 we read this:

1 Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him, we ask you, brothers, 2 not to become easily unsettled or alarmed by some prophecy, report or letter supposed to have come from us, saying that the day of the Lord has already come. 3 Don't let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. 4 He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God's temple, proclaiming himself to be God. 5 Don't you remember that when I was with you I used to tell you these things? 6 And now you know what is holding him back, so that he may be revealed at the proper time. 7 For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work; but the one who now holds it back will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way. 8 And then the lawless one will be revealed whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of his mouth and destroy by the splendor of his coming. 9 The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders

There have been many interesting people in the past who could have possibly become the prophesied one-world economic dictator.

In fact, the Apostle John said this in 1 John 2:18:

18 Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour.

Recently there has been a great deal of talk, even among non-Christians, that President Obama is a messiah figure.

As early as February of 2008, Newsweek Magazine asked: ďIs Obama a (or the) Messiah? The article used this illustration from Chris Matthews of MSNBC;:

"Iíve been following politics since I was about 5. Iíve never seen anything like this. This is bigger than Kennedy. [Obama] comes along, and he seems to have the answers. This is the New Testament. This is surprising.Ē

On our website, Prophecy Central, we have accumulated quite a collection of other articles that express the same thought about President Obama. Personally, I donít think he will become Antichrist, but his meteoric rise to prominence certainly illustrates how a previously unknown person could become the world leader in a short period of time.

Only time will tell what will come of all this speculation. It is not wrong to wonder about the possibility of any great person somehow becoming the predicted False Christ. But it is wrong to make un-provable accusations. One day Jesus Christ's will return to take His church away before the coming "Tribulation." After the true Christian believers have been removed, the identity of the one-world ruler will be confirmed, and people will then be forced to receive "The Mark of the Beast" in order to be permitted to buy or sell.

14 Because of the signs he was given power to do on behalf of the first beast, he deceived the inhabitants of the earth. He ordered them to set up an image in honor of the beast who was wounded by the sword and yet lived. 15 He was given power to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that it could speak and cause all who refused to worship the image to be killed. 16 He also forced everyone, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on his right hand or on his forehead, 17 so that no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of his name. 18 This calls for wisdom. If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is man's number. His number is 666. - Rev 13:14-18
