Iraq investigating whether Islamic State leader al-Baghdadi killed in US air strikes
Nov. 9, 2014 - Air strikes by US-led coalition warplanes may have killed Islamic State (Isil) chief Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. It is
known that a gathering of ISIL leaders was targeted, but at this time a confirmation is not available.
The death of the elusive Baghdadi would be a major victory for the coalition of countries carrying out air strikes against Isil and aiding
Iraqi forces fighting to regain large areas of Iraq that the jihadists have overrun.
Meanwhile, President Barack Obama announced that the U.S. will send up to 1,500 more US troops to Iraq to advise and
train the country's military forces.

Kurds key in fight against Islamic State group
Oct. 29, 2014 - The Kurds, millions of people from a previously nomadic ethnic group, live in five Middle Eastern countries:
Turkey, Iraq, Syria, Iran and Armenia. The majority of them are Sunni Muslims and most of the rest are Shia Muslims. They have valiantly
defended Kobani against ISIS so far. The Turkish government has now agreed to allow a group of Kurds to cross into Syria to assist in the
ongoing battle in Syria.
The cooperation between Kurds in these countries underscores their loyalty to the shared dream of establishing an independent and unified
Kurdistan, or Land of the Kurds — and not to the nations in which they live.

Oct. 18, 2014 - According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), some Iraqi pilots, who were trained under
ex-Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, have defected and have joined the Islamic State. Rami Abdul Rahman, head of the SOHR, said that the
pilots are flying three captured fighter jets in the vicinity of Aleppo.
Witnesses told the SOHR the planes appeared to be MiG-21 or MiG-23 models. The BBC's Sally Nabil in Baghdad says IS has three planes
which it captured earlier from the Syrian military in Aleppo and Raqqa.

U.S. airstrikes help push ISIS back in Kobani
Nov. 17, 2014 - The number of U.S. airstrikes against ISIS in the besieged Syrian city of Kobani has increased this week.
This has allowed the Kurdish fighters to push back the terrorists there.
Rear Adm. John Kirby told the State Department's daily briefing that the increased bombing was not a strategic shift.
Kirby said the number of airstrikes in Syria or Iraq depends on how "target rich" an area is. The past few days around Kobani have seen more
ISIS targets, he said.

ISIS nearly made it to Baghdad airport, top U.S. military leader says
Oct. 13, 2014 - Gen. Martin Dempsey told ABC's "This Week" that ISIS forces nearly reached the Baghdad airport until the U.S.

"The tool that was immediately available was the Apache [helicopter]. The risk of operating in a hostile environment is there constantly," the
chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said.
Use of the helicopters in Iraq is risky because of a possible strike by surface-to-air missiles, which ISIS is known to possess.

Oct. 11, 2014 -
A secret decision apparently has been made by the United States, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and even Iran to let the strategic Syrian Kurdish town of
Kobani on the Turkish-Syrian border fall to ISIS fighters.
The lives of some 160,000 Syrian Kurds are threatened by this deliberate lack of support. The U.S. bombing in the area has been weak and
ineffective, and the surrounding nations do not want to see the establishment of a separate Kurdistan.

"It is my estimation, that after all the dust settles…I'm betting we're up to around 5,000 [soldiers] by the end of the year" in Iraq. "

Obama: Islamic State 'is not Islamic'
Sept. 10, 2011 - President Obama delivered a speech to announce “a comprehensive and sustained counter-terrorism
strategy” to “degrade, and ultimately destroy,” ISIS. His plan includes:
- Conduct a systematic campaign of airstrike against ISIL targets in Iraq and Syria.
- Increase support to forces fighting terrorists on the ground, but avoid getting "dragged into another ground war in Iraq."
- Assist the moderate Syrian opposition to prevail against ISIL and the Assad regime.
- Provide humanitarian aid to oppressed civilians, including Sunni and Shiite Muslims, Christians and other religious minorities.
The President also stressed that ISIL is "not Islamic," because “No religion condones the killing of innocents."
In addition, he said, “ISIL is certainly not a state." He explained that it was an al-Qaida’s affiliate that has taken advantage of the unrest
in Syria and Iraq, and it is recognized by no government as a legitimate state.
