Syria Spillover Violence in Lebanon Raises Alarms
Oct. 30, 2013 - Lebanese supporters and opponents of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad have had recent deadly clashes. Seven days
of such fighting in Tripoli, the second largest city of Lebanon, have killed at least 17 and injured more than 100 people.
The fighting is prompting worries once again that spillover violence from the civil war raging in neighboring Syria will trigger widespread
sectarian conflict in Lebanon.

Al-Nusra Front forging al-Qaida base in Syria
Sept. 27, 2013 - A detailed report on the rapid growth of the Al-Nusra group in Syria has been released by the Meir Amit Intelligence
and Terrorism Information Center near Tel Aviv. Dr. Reuven Erlich, the head of the center said the rate of the group, which is related to Al-Qaida,
is alarming.
“What took 10 years to happen in Afghanistan occurred in Syria within a year or two," said Erlich. . . "Syria is in heart of Middle East and in
the backyard of Europe, and borders Israel. Geo-politically, it’s more central than Afghanistan and Pakistan."
According to Erlich, this means that Syria will soon begin exporting terrorism.

Islamic regime in the face of continued pressure by the West over its illicit nuclear program.

Syria would cause more terrorism and violence. He ridiculed President Obama's view of American "exceptionalism." He said:

problem and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and further destabilize the Middle East and North Africa."

Syria accepts Russian proposal on weapons; France to bring resolution to Security Council
Sept. 10, 2013 - The Russian proposal to avert a U.S. strike against Syria by transferring control of its chemical weapons was accepted
by Syria. China offered their support for the idea.
Russia floated the idea of handing over the weapons Monday, after a seemingly off-hand remark by U.S. Secretary of State John F. Kerry
that such a move would be the only way . . . to avoid a U.S. military strike.
French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said his country would draft a U.N. Security Council resolution to put the plan into effect.

Direct link between Assad and gas attack remains elusive for U.S.
Sept. 7, 2013 - While President Obama tries to convince US Congress to attack Syria, the evidence released so far does not
show a direct link to President Bashar Assad or his inner circle. More than 1400 people were killed by sarin nerve gas, but Assad's government
claims that Sunni rebels were behind the attack to turn world opinion against Assad.
After wrongly claiming that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction before the 2003 U.S. invasion, the U.S. intelligence community, along
with the Obama administration, are trying to build as solid a case as they can about [the attack].

Vladimir Putin, but he says he will still speak with him. Yesterday he admitted that U.S.-Russian relations have "hit a wall."
"It is not possible for Mr. Assad to regain legitimacy in a country where he's killed tens of thousands of his own people," Obama said.

Sept. 2, 2013 -
The Secretary General of NATO said Monday he wass “convinced” chemical weapons were used by the Syrian forces in an attack last month
that left hundreds dead, and called for a “firm” international response.
Anders Fogh Rasmussen said the evidence is strong that Syrian soldiers loyal to president Bashar Assad had carried out the deadly chemical weapon
assault on August 21. He called for a strong international reaction to the attack but said that NATO would not take part in any military action
unless Turkey, a NATO member, is attacked by Syria.
