Connecting the Dots Called a “Bestseller”

November 4th, 2011

Armageddon Books is an online bookseller that specializes in Bible prophecy books and products. They have been on the Internet about as long as Prophecy Central, and we have enjoyed watching each other grow for more than a decade.

We were pleasantly surprised to see that our book, Connecting the Dots: A Handbook of Bible Prophecy had crept up to the # 10 spot on their list of “October Bestsellers.” It felt good to see it displayed in the company of books by great writers like Hal Lindsey, Clarence Larkin, and Tim LaHaye.

They also listed our book on Page One of their General Prophecy section, and if one follows the link there, they devoted a three-page long description of the book.

 To God be the glory!

What Ever Happened To America?

October 28th, 2011

A few years ago we could not have imagined how rapidly our beloved country would decline.  Prophecy students have wondered for decades how it could be that the United States will not apparently be a major player in the Bible’s End Times scenario.  Europe is there as a Revived Roman Empire, but with a much weaker composition than ancient Rome.  Ancient biblical lands are still players in the prophetic future. They have modern names: Iran, Iraq, Syria, Libya, and others.  But how could the one great “superpower” of our generation be ignored in the struggles of the end of this age?

Look at our nation now. Instead of being a support to the rest of the world during this economic crisis, we have descended into the worst financial condition since at least the Great Depression. Despite endless rhetoric from the politicians and economic experts, we are still in free-fall.  Our investments have declined, our jobs have been given to other nations and our own people are sinking into poverty.

Our military sacrifices have been undercut by bad governmental decisions. Terrorists are convinced that they will ultimately overcome in this present struggle. We are about to leave Afghanistan and Iraq without improving that part of the world. We can’t keep Iran from developing nuclear weapons. Our support for Israel is anemic. We have lost the peaceful gains we enjoyed for a little time with Russia.

Why is this happening, and what does it mean for our generation?  Historians assure us that the early greatness of America was a byproduct of our moral and ethical world view.  Our leaders were generally Bible-believing heroes.  Our word was our bond: we kept our promises.  We taught our children what was right and wrong.  We worked hard and were proud of what we produced.  Our churches were valiant for the truth and were faithful to expose evil.

During the past two generations the church in America has turned from its literal interpretation of the Bible, and has allowed the corrupting influences of secular humanism, the sexual revolution, abortion, and other ungodly beliefs and practices to slowly infiltrate its leadership.  This change is actually one of the main predictions of the End Times.  It is called apostasy, or a “falling away” from the truth.  The Apostle Paul warned…

For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.  They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.  – 2 Timothy 4:3-4

As a result, at the very time Christians should be most concerned about the rapid fulfillment of End Times predictions, many of them have been anesthetized to the seriousness of their condition.  Therefore, our nation has lost its vitality and is in the process of becoming irrelevant. The Bible did not need to mention our presence because we will have lost our influence.

Does it have to end this way?  Actually, no!  There is still hope for America. What God promised for believers in the Old Testament would still apply today if we would just turn back to Him and allow him to bring a great redeeming revival!

If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.  – 2 Chronicles 7:14

Camping’s Last Stand

October 17th, 2011

When his earlier prediction about the end of the world failed to materialize last May 21st, Harold Camping, President of Family Radio, recalculated and said that the Rapture (whisking away of the Church) would take place on Oct. 21.  Thankfully, there has not been much publicity for the new date, but some news outlets are reminding the public of this ill-advised date-setting.

In the online “Who’s Who in Biblical Prophecy,” Camping is called a “bad apple,” because of previous failed predictions that Christ would return on September 6, 1994, and then again last May.

Responsible prophecy teachers agree that we can not set a date for the Lord’s return.  He taught us that himself!

“But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” – Matthew 24:36 (read verses 32-44).

At this time Family Radio’s home page is totally devoted to Camping’s online book, We Are Almost There!

Right after his failed prediction in May, Camping suffered a stroke, and he is now bed-ridden. Hopefully, after the 21st of this month, we will not hear from him again.

Remembering Steve Jobs

October 5th, 2011

We all knew Steve Jobs’ health was failing, but it was a shock to hear that he had died today, just a few weeks after resigning as Chairman of Apple Computer.  Losing Steve Jobs was like losing Thomas Edison.  His genius changed the world in which we live.

I had the privilege of meeting him in the early days of personal computers. It was my privilege to work with Apple Computer, developing simple educational programs for a brand new and very exciting market. Apple used some of my programs for their Educational Classics.  I have a letter in my files from a vice president of the company saying that Steve Jobs had reviewed one of my new programs and liked it.

Over the years I  followed his ups and downs, and like everyone else, I marveled at his accomplishments and the way they improved the quality of our lives.

I also met Steve Wozniak, the co-founder of Apple in those days, and recently a friend of mine took my original Apple II to a conference where Woz was speaking.  I sent along a copy of my book, Connecting the Dots, and a letter sharing the Gospel with him.  He signed the computer in indelible ink, but didn’t comment on the letter.

Over the years I have prayed often for these to men, and for Bill Gates, who was also instrumental in these world-changing technological developments.

Jesus asked, “What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?” (Mark 8:36)  I hope Steve Jobs found Christ in his brief but amazing earthly journey.  I never heard that he did, but I sincerely hope to meet him again in Heaven.

Rapture Drill Today

September 28th, 2011

When will Jesus return to catch away His followers?  He said we could not know the exact details of his return, but as J. Danson Smith reminds us in his classic poem, “Perhaps Today,” it could be any day.  It could be today!

Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish spiritual New Year, begins at sundown today, Sept. 28, 2011, and lasts for two days.  We don’t believe in setting dates for the Lord’s return, but it has been our practice for many years to observe this festival by conducting our personal “Rapture Drill.”

Rosh Hashanah is also known as “The Feast of Trumpets.” The sounding of the trumpet is a key element of the prophecy of the Rapture of the Church in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, and 1 Corinthians 15:52. It is also noteworthy that the Feasts of Israel are symbolic of major future events in Christianity.

The first of the seven holidays prescribed in Leviticus is Passover, the observance of Israel’s deliverance from Egypt. The Last Supper was actually the observance of Passover, and Jesus’ death is associated with this event because He is our sacrificial lamb.

Another holiday, three days after Passover, is the Feast of Firstfruits, and Jesus was raised from the dead on the third day. He is the firstfruits of the Resurrection.

Then comes The Feast of Weeks, or Shavuot. It is also called “Pentecost.” The Holy Spirit was first given to the Church on this holiday.

Rosh Hashanah is the first of three annual fall holidays that remain. It is the beginning of 10 days of self examination. It features the blowing of the shofar, the trumpet made of a rams’ horn. Since the next big event in Christianity will be the Rapture of the Church, Pentecost is a good symbolic possibility for this great event.

Yom Kippur, the “Day of Atonement” comes at the end of the 10 days of self examination. It could very well be symbolic of the Tribulation Period that Christians expect after the Rapture of the Church.

Finally, Sukkot, The “Feast of Tabernacles” is observed. This event reminds people that God dwells with them. This would be especially appropriate as a symbol of Christ’s Return to the Earth as King of Kings at the end of the Tribulation Period.

So, will the Rapture take place on Rosh Hashanah? Jesus said plainly that we could not know exactly when He will return, and that it will be at a time that we don’t think it will happen. (Matthew 24:42-44, Matthew 25:13.)

Again, we simply do not set dates! But we should expect Jesus’ return every day, shouldn’t we? So what would be a better reminder than this Jewish holiday to consciously do the things we would want to be doing just before the Rapture?

What would we do during this exercise? We would be spiritually ready and active – living for the Lord instead of for our own selfish interests. We would share the Gospel with everyone in our family and close circle of friends, neighbors and associates. And we would leave behind some helpful information so that those who would be left behind would know how to accept Christ. If you decide to do your own “Rapture Drill,” you will surely think of other things that should be done before you suddenly leave this earth.

The Prophecy Pendulum

September 19th, 2011

Bible prophecy is full of mysterious things: the four horsemen of the apocalypse, a seven-headed dragon, a lamb that speaks like a dragon, stars falling from the heavens, and many more.  I have studied these mysteries for most of my life.  But there is a new puzzle that has gradually captured my attention in recent years.  It is the question of how the Church of the End Times could be lured into complacency just at the time that the prophecies all begin to materialize right before our eyes.  Many New Testament passages predict a time of apostasy, or “falling away” of the Church. According to Matthew 24:12 the love of most will grow cold in the last phase of this age. 2 Timothy 4:3 predicts this:

For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.

We are now living in a period of time where every day’s news brings fresh fulfillments of the striking prophecies of the Bible.  But the strange truth is, people do not seem to give the matter much thought.  Hal Lindsey’s book, “The Late Great Planet Earth,” was the best-selling non-fiction prophecy book, and the “Left Behind” series by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins was the best-selling fiction series in American history.  Still, the average Christian is not living in anticipation that Jesus’ return is near.

Trying to understand how there could be a lack of interest in prophecy at a time like this, I have begun to think about it as “The Prophecy Pendulum.”  As we all know, the pendulum of a clock is always swinging.  It is sometimes in the middle, but just as often, it is at the far left of its swing or on the far right.

On one side of this swinging pendulum there are major events that capture everyone’s attention, such as the rebirth of the nation of Israel in 1948, or the dangerous Middle East wars that threaten to escalate into a world-wide conflict.  On the other side, there are promises of peace, or periods of relative prosperity.  Whenever it is possible, Satan will convince people not to think about the End Times.  He knows that when people are focused on the “blessed hope,” they will not be inclined to follow him. The Apostle Peter said that knowledge about God’s future plans would cause us to live a more godly life (2 Peter 3:11-12).

Satan uses fear to convince people to ignore information about an uncertain future.  There is always something wonderful coming up: a wedding, the birth of a child, or maybe a trip to Hawaii. If the Lord does come back, they hope that it won’t be before their next “big event.”  They discover that the best way to avoid hearing bad news would be to go to a church where the pastor never teaches prophecy.  There are whole denominations that won’t touch the subject.  Seeker-sensitive churches seldom teach anything “controversial,” including Bible prophecy.  And many well-intentioned pastors just don’t feel qualified to tackle the topic.

Prophecy Central in the September 11 Archives!

September 8th, 2011

Prophecy Central had already been on the Internet for nearly four years when the September 11 attacks took place.  We were among the first to report the story as it gradually unfolded on that terrible day.

We didn’t know it at the time, but soon after the attacks, our site was being tracked and archived by a massive project that would eventually be released as the September 11 Digital Archive. This historical collection is available online, and is physically housed in the Library of Congress.

We recommend that you browse this incredible project, the largest of its kind in the world, and be sure to check out Prophecy Central’s contributions.  In their abstract of our site, they wrote:

Prophecy Central, a Web Site produced by Ron Graff, is part of the Library of Congress September 11 Web Archive and preserves the web expressions of individuals, groups, the press and institutions in the United States and from around the world in the aftermath of the attacks in the United States on September 11, 2001.

You may also read the actual posts directly from the Prophecy Central site, starting with the very day that the drama began.  We have kept all our news summaries online ever since 9/11/11.  You can trace the mood of the country, the eventual war in Afghanistan, and even Osama bin Laden’s death recently.  Of course, many of the links to external sources on these old pages no longer work, but we have kept our brief summaries of the news stories so you can still see what was happening.

What’s Next with Libya?

August 22nd, 2011

Now that Libyan rebels have the upper hand, and Muammar Gaddafi is in hiding, what kind of government will the nation adopt?  During the past six months of fighting there, hope has been expressed by many that Libya and other countries that have made changes during the “Arab Spring” will choose to adopt a democratic form of government.

However, there have been strong warnings from the beginning of the conflict that this is not likely to happen.  Instead, there is much evidence that the Muslim Brotherhood and other radical Islamists will take advantage of the situation to join the march toward a new coalition of Islamic states.

Meanwhile, Turkey, the only good example of a democratic Islamic society, has experienced disappointments with their bid for a place in the European Union, has changed its previous position of cooperation with Israel to one of confrontation, and shows signs of wanting to rebuild its image as head of an Islamic Caliphate once more.

It is interesting that after Ezekiel’s prophecies about the rebirth of the nation of Israel (chapters 36 and 37), he predicted a great battle in the End Times (chapters 38 and 39) between a coalition of nations, led by Russia and several Islamic allies, including Iran, Libya, and possibly Turkey.

Stay tuned to this development and visit Prophecy Central’s War of Gog and Magog section for more information.

Francis Chan’s “Erasing Hell”

July 8th, 2011

I could hardly wait to read Francis Chan’s new book, Erasing Hell. It may well be the ultimate answer to Rob Bell’s questions about hell from his book, Love Wins. Both men have had a profound influence on our generation. Both are young, relevant to the younger thinkers, and fresh in the way they express themselves. Bell’s book raised a multitude of questions that are asked by skeptics, and left most of them unanswered. He implied that hell may not be a literal place in the future as much as it is hellish conditions here on earth. And reviewers of his book, which I also read immediately when it was released three months ago, pretty much agreed that Bell’s teaching is Universalism – a belief that God’s love will ultimately win over the non-believers, if not in this life, then in some future drama.

Chan and his co-author Professor Preston Sprinkle have made a huge contribution to this subject, not only because of their commitment to the inerrancy of the Bible, but because Chan’s earlier books were so well received. Crazy Love was a New York Times best-seller with more than one and a half million copies sold so far.

This is a book you should read for yourself, and keep around as a reference manual on the subject. But here are some of my impressions. Like most of us Chan would rather not believe in hell, but he shows by the preponderance of clear Scripture references that we do not have that luxury. He demonstrates how prevalent the concept is in such Old Testament books as Job and (Jeremiah’s) Lamentations, and throughout the New Testament, starting with Jesus’ own extensive teachings about the subject.

Chan dares to voice what we all feel at times. He says that if he were God, he would not allow some of the suffering God allowed, or prescribe a punishment like hell. But, neither would he (or we) have permitted our Son to pay the awful penalty for our sin.

This gap between God’s ways and ours is given in Isaiah 55:8-9
8 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways,”
declares the LORD.
9 “As the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Furthermore, as Romans 9:19-21 teaches, God is the potter, and we are just the clay. Ultimately Job, Jeremiah, Paul and others realized that God’s ways are just. Knowledge about the reality of hell should cause us to be more genuine, more concerned for those who are in need, and more willing to let God be God.

Food Storage and Prophecy

July 2nd, 2011

Barbara and I have been married for 50 wonderful years. Our life has been very good because of our personal relationship with The Lord Jesus Christ.

We have also been involved in pastoral ministry for 50 years, and are just now retiring after 20 years of leading our wonderful church family, Solid Ground Church, in Alta Loma, California. However, we do not want to waste our “golden years” with meaningless activity. For many years I have had a special interest in Bible prophecy, and have written articles and spoken at conferences on the subject. For the past 14 years I have edited “Prophecy Central.” It has become very popular among Evangelical Bible students and ranks very high in a Google search for either “prophecy” or “Bible prophecy.”. A good friend and I have written a new book, “Connecting the Dots,” that serves as a handbook of Bible prophecy. I will now be available to speak at various churches and conferences on the subject.

We have considered many ways of supplementing our income during our retirement, and have decided that helping other people discover and enjoy the incredible variety of food that can be stored for use in case of an emergency would be a perfect home-based business.. The best part is that these foods from Shelf Reliance are a delicious and nutritious addition to our regular diet. Because of that, older foods can be eaten instead of discarded when it is time for them to be replaced.

For our prophecy students, let me add this: We trust in the Lord for our provision, and we do not fear the future, even though we are seeing the fulfillment of many End-Times prophecies. We don’t store food to survive through the coming hard times of the Tribulation. We believe in the Rapture of the Church before the Tribulation begins. But simple logic and wisdom require people everywhere to be prepared for the kind of natural disasters and other emergencies we are seeing all over the world. In our area it just makes sense to have adequate supplies in case of an earthquake.

Please take a look at this great new product line.
