Is Ukraine in Bible Prophecy?

Now that Ukraine is in the headlines, the question arises, “How does this former Soviet Union country fit into end time prophecy?” If it does become a significant player, it will be because of its relationship with Russia.

Before the fall of the “Iron Curtain” in 1991, Ukraine had been a vital part of the Soviet Union. It was the agricultural center of the union and hosted one of the largest military bases. Since that time it has been an independent nation, but still closely allied with Russia. However, in 2009 the European Union established the “Eastern Partnership,” in order to implement discussions with former Soviet Union countries about trade, economic strategy, travel agreements, and other issues. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_Partnership)

Ukraine was scheduled to join the partnership in November of 2013. Russia exerted intense pressure on the country not to join the partnership.  They withheld natural gas and other vital supplies. Viktor Yanukovych, the President of Ukraine, decided not to sign the agreement.  This caused a great uprising by the people of the country who, for the most part, preferred to be aligned with the European Union.

Hundreds of thousands of citizens assembled to protest the decision in the Maidan (“Independence Square”) in their capital city of Kiev. (http://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-protests-what-you-need-to-know-2013-12) This protest continued, with great numbers of them camping out for three months!

On February 18, 2014, Ukraine police began trying to disperse the crowd.  This led to open fighting in Kiev that could become a civil war.

So, back to the question of whether or not Ukraine is in Bible prophecy, it is not mentioned by name (or by known biblical ancestors), but its relation to Russia is significant. If it continues to be held in Russia’s orbit of influence, it could very well be a participant in the War of Gog and Magog.

More than 2500 years ago the Lord told Ezekiel to record a prediction about the re-establishment of Israel as a nation (Ezekiel 36 and 37).  Israel did become a nation in startling fulfillment of this prophecy in 1948.

Next, Ezekiel predicted a dreadful war against the new nation (Ezekiel 38-39).

Now the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Son of man, set your face against Gog, of the land of Magog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal, and prophesy against him, and say, ‘Thus says the Lord God: Behold, I am against you, O Gog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal. I will turn you around, put hooks into your jaws, and lead you out, with all your army, horses, and horsemen, all splendidly clothed, a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords. Persia, Ethiopia, and Libyaare with them, all of them with shield and helmet; Gomer and all its troops; the house of Togarmah from the far north and all its troops—many people are with you. – Ezekiel 38:1-6

For generations prophecy teachers had been identifying Russia as the most likely leader of this coming War of Gog and Magog. Russia will be assisted by Persia (Iran), Cush (Ethiopia & Sudan), Put (Libya), Gomer, Beth Togarmah and other nations (possibly Turkey and/or other Islamic nations like those once part of the Soviet Union). Most of these names are listed in the genealogies of Genesis 10.

God will bring a quick end to this future war. He may use literal fire and brimstone, as in the days of Sodom, or he might pit nation against nation, the way he often did in the Old Testament, to precipitate a nuclear exchange.

I will call for a sword against Gog throughout all My mountains,” says the Lord God. “Every man’s sword will be against his brother. 22 And I will bring him to judgment with pestilence and bloodshed; I will rain down on him, on his troops, and on the many peoples who are with him, flooding rain, great hailstones, fire, and brimstone. 23 Thus I will magnify Myself and sanctify Myself, and I will be known in the eyes of many nations. Then they shall know that I am the Lord.”’ – Ezekiel 38:21-23

Current conditions on the world scene make it conceivable that this war could be materializing. Because of the leadership vacuum in the world recently, Forbes
magazine named Russia’s President Vladimir Putin “The world’s most powerful person.”He is a relic from the KGB era with ambitions to rebuild Russia’s greatness. He has injected himself, and Russia, into the affairs of the Islamic Middle East in a forceful way. In the process, he reveals his animosity toward Israel.

Putin is embarrassed by Ukraine’s rebellion, and determined to solidify Russia’s control. If Russia does succeed in forcing Ukraine to side with them, this could be the start of a new take-over of other Eastern European nations as well.

It could also be a wake-up call to the European Union. They will realize that they need to adopt stronger leadership. A powerful commander could help the EU form the final evil world government that was prophesied in Daniel 2:36-45.

On a hunch I got a map and drew a line from Jerusalem to Moscow. Where in the Ukraine do you think the line passed directly through? ….. Crimea, in fact it goes right through the striaghts in the black sea. Now sure what that means, but wow

  4. Conan says:

I think that Gomer and Togarmah will be Turcophone countries like Uzbekistan, Kirghistan, Kazakhstan, Tatarstan, Azerbadian etc.

However, Turkey has become recently antisemitic andf might join Russia (Magog).
