The Utter Destruction of Damascus

Damascus was an important city in Bible history, and it is thought to be the oldest continuously-inhabited city in the world.

We have noted before that a prophecy of Damascus’ utter destruction has yet to take place, and that Syria does not appear to be an ally of the other enemies of Israel in end-times prophecies (See Syria page in Prophecy Central and our Blog).

Since Syria’s civil war began two years ago, more than 100,000 Syrian have been killed, and last week the government, led by President Bashar Assad, apparently used chemical weapons of mass destruction against their own citizens killing hundreds more. This could be the cause of this great destruction of Damascus and other parts of Syria. As always, we stress that it “could” be the trigger, because only God knows how and when His predictions will be fulfilled.

The burden against Damascus.

“Behold, Damascus will cease from being a city,
And it will be a ruinous heap.
The cities of Aroer are forsaken;
They will be for flocks
Which lie down, and no one will make them afraid.
The fortress also will cease from Ephraim,
The kingdom from Damascus,
And the remnant of Syria;
They will be as the glory of the children of Israel,”
Says the Lord of hosts.
– Isaiah 17:1-3

 Syria is an inveterate opponent of Israel. It fought against God’s Chosen People in the wars of 1948, 1967, and 1973. Israel has had to conduct surgical strikes into Syria in recent years to stop them from producing nuclear weapons, and to stop the flow of advanced missiles from Russia into the hands of Hezbollah. It is the “puppet state” of Iran, the worst of enemies to Israel and even to the United States. It is the client of Russia and China.

Now that they have used chemical weapons against their own people, Western nations and Arab countries are outraged, and are clamoring for something to be done. Syria says that, if they are attacked themselves, they will retaliate against Israel. Russia, China, and Iran are all warning the rest of the world to leave Syria alone or the whole Middle East will become inflamed.

President Obama would like to demonstrate his resolve by doing something, since this outrageous situation has crossed his own “red line.” However, he certainly would not want to destroy Damascus! The Pentagon is ready for any level of warfare the President might order, but no one really knows what will happen once a strike against Syria begins.

When Syria is attacked, would it dare do serious damage to Israel? Israel has already warned that such a response would be disastrous. Of course, Israel would not want to be forced into such a quandary, but remember, they could only lose one war and they would cease to exist as a nation.  Therefore, it is not out of the question that they “could” eliminate Damascus with just one nuclear weapon.

We pray that this scenario does not happen. But somewhere along the trail of the future, Damascus will cease to be a city. This, by the way, could be the reason Syria is not mentioned in the Ezekiel 38 and 39 prediction of an even greater war. This conflict, called “Gog and Magog,” will pit Russia, Iran, and possibly Turkey and other Islamic countries against Israel. God will intervene and preserve His people. This is most likely the same as the war of Revelation 6:3-4 which will take place just before, or just after, the start of the Tribulation Period.

  1. Quinton says:

    It has still not been proven that Assad was behind the chemical attacks, some media outlets are claiming that it was actually the rebels who carried out the attacks. The mainstream media cannot be trusted. The US needs to avoid war in Syria if we are going to avoid the potentiality of starting WW3. The US went into Iraq under false pretenses (weapons of mass destruction that never existed) and we need to stay out of Syria. What can be gained from getting involved? Are we the police of the world? Let Syria sort out its own problems, we have enough problem of our own in the United States, don’t you think? If the US attacks Syria, it wont be Syria attacking Israel, it will be Russia and China. Is that a road we really want to go down?

  2. I believe that current events in Syria have nothing to do with Isaiah 17 (or Isaiah 7-8 and Amos 1). Isaiah and Amos were contemporary prophets, and both predicted that Syria and Israel would soon be destroyed by the same opponent, Assyria. II Kings 16 shows in detail that their prophecies were fulfilled, and this is validated by historical records as outlined in this article:

    One of the biggest keys pointing to the fulfillment of Isaiah 17 in Isaiah’s own time period is the phrase “in that day” in verse 4. Isaiah clearly prophesied that Damascus and Syria would fall in the same “day” that Israel would fall. And we know that Israel (the northern kingdom) fell in 722 B.C.
