In January and February of 2011 we posted three blogs about the Arab Spring in Egypt, what the Bible says about Egypt’s future, and a warning about the Muslim Brotherhood. At that time former Egyptian President Mubarak was deposed by the people who wanted a democratic government. Unfortunately the only group that appeared to be capable of establishing a new government was the Muslim Brotherhood.
However, the Brotherhood had a history of jihad and was not a champion of democracy. The people did have a free election, and they chose Mohammed Morsi to be their new President. Unfortunately, he immediately began to act like a dictator. With the help of the Muslim Brotherhood, a new constitution was crafted that was really based on strict Islamic Sharia Law. This radical constitution was not what the average person in Egypt wanted. It caused discrimination against women, persecution of Christians and other minorities, and threatened to undermine the peace treaty that Egypt and Israel had enjoyed for more than 30 years. Relations with the U.S. also deteriorated during this time.
Worst of all for the majority of Egyptians, the country’s economy continued to get worse. For many months there were protests in various cities against the Morsi government and violent confrontations between disenchanted citizens and members of the Muslim Brotherhood.
Recently millions of Egyptians have gathered in protest all over the country demanding Morsi’s ouster. The Muslim Brotherhood and their backers organized other huge rallies in support of Morsi. Egypt’s army declared that the two sides must work things out within 48 hours or they would take matters into their own hands. The two short days passed without an agreement, so the military took action today – detaining Morsi and other government figures, appointing the chief justice of the constitutional court as the interim head of state, suspending Egypt’s constitution, and promising that new elections would be held.
So, how does this shocking new development fit Bible prophecy? In our earlier blogs we pointed out that a major war against Israel, known as the War of Gog and Magog, is described in Ezekiel, chapters 38 and 39. It will be an attack, probably led by Russia, with the help of Turkey, Iran, and other Islamic nations. Egypt is not mentioned. God will intervene in Israel’s behalf. He will use “fire and brimstone” to defeat Israel’s enemies. This could either be a picture of a brief nuclear war or a supernatural event like the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah.
The interesting thing about Egypt is that if Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood continued to have their way, Egypt would almost certainly take sides against Israel in this prophesied war. But if the current shake-up there results in the more secular government that the masses are demanding, Egypt will probably sit out the War of Gog and Magog, just as the Scriptures suggest.
