American Wars

PROPHETIC SIGNIFICANCE: The War against Terrorism that began with the 9/11 attacks in 2001 has become a world-wide battle, involving many nations. However, the primary focus of the U.S. retaliation was the Taliban in Afghanistan and Osama bin Laden's al Qaida network. After an original occupation by U.S. forces there a democratic but weak Afghan government was formed.

The U.S. became involved with Iraq in order to remove their tyrannical leader Saddam Hussein. The Iraq war and other anti-terrorist activities drew down U.S. forces in Afghanistan, allowing the Taliban to regain some areas of the country. This led to a new "surge" by US forces to restore order in the country and allow the withdrawal of American service personnel.

U.S. troops were removed from Iraq before that country had a stable government. This allowed Iraq to be a new breeding ground for terrorist groups.

A long and bitter civil war in Syria (adjacent to Iraq) led to the establishment of the most powerful Islamic terrorist group called the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). In 2014 this radical offshoot of al Quaida began conquering parts of Iraq, brutally slaughtering Christians and even Muslims who disagreed with them. They declared their movement a new "Islamic State" caliphate. President Obama was hesitant to get involved, but when the group started beheading American journalists and posting the video on the Internet, public pressure forced him to declare a limited war against them -- to "degrade and destroy" them, but not to commit to American "boots on the ground."

Islamic Terrorism continues to spread, especially in the Middle East and Africa.

There are no clear references to a country like America in the line-up of End Times nations, prompting many teachers to suggest that our nation will have lost much of the strength and prestige that it once enjoyed.

Military experts doubt that the problem can be solved by air strikes alone. Gen. Michael Hayden, a former CIA director, told Fox News, "It is my estimation, that after all the dust settles…I'm betting we're up to around 5,000 [soldiers] by the end of the year" in Iraq. "

It is not clear what the next steps will be and the extent of military forces that the supporting countries will commit.
