Iran

PROPHETIC SIGNIFICANCE:

Since the Islamic Revolution in 1979, Iran has been the champion of the Shi'ite branch of Islam. Now their leadership harbors a deep hatred for the United States, whom they call "The Great Satan," and Israel, "The Little Satan."

Even though they have immense supplies of oil, they have claimed to need nuclear power as well. It is now admitted by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the United Nation's nuclear watchdog, that their goal is the development of nuclear weapons. At the beginning of 2012 experts believe that it will take only a year or less for them to become a deadly threat to Israel, the Middle East, and United States.

Iran figures prominently in Bible prophecy because they are the direct descendants of the Persians, who are mentioned in Ezekiel 38 as key allies of Magog, a powerful nation in the North that many prophecy scholars have tentatively identified as Russia. Together with other nations, these allies will engage Israel in a future war against Israel. See The War of Gog and Magog.

Obama to Bypass Congress on Easing of Iran Sanctions

Oct. 20, 2014 - According to a New York Times article, President Obama is doing everything in his power to bypass Congress and suspend most of the sanctions placed on Iran by Congressional action in 2010.
Republican Sen. Mark S. Kirk of Illinois, a vocal critic of the negotiations, said Congress could not allow the president to “unilaterally unravel Iran sanctions that passed the Senate in a 99 to 0 vote.”
Ongoing negotiations will end on November 24, and Menendez predicts that if the talks do not end Iran's illicit nuclear weapons program that Congress will pass even more stringent sanctions.

However, the President evidently has the power to temporarily suspend some of the sanctions in order to get a deal. Critics say that this will result in Iran becoming "a threshold nuclear state" -- one that does not yet have nuclear weapons, but could reach that point very quickly.

Israeli PM says Iran poses greater global threat than IS

Oct. 19, 2014 - As the November 24 deadline for a deal about Iran's nuclear program approaches, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that making the wrong decisions will make Iran a "far more serious" threat than the Islamic State.
“We are facing the danger of an agreement with the world powers that will leave Iran as a nuclear threshold state, with thousands of centrifuges with which Iran will be able to make a nuclear bomb in a short time,”

Mysterious blast at Iran nuke plant proves weapons program alive, say experts

Oct. 9, 2014 -
The massive blast at an Iranian nuclear plant earlier this week remains shrouded in mystery, but it cleared up one thing, according to those who track the Islamic Republic: The nuclear weapons program Tehran has long denied is real.

'Deadly fire' at Iran military explosives facility

Oct. 7, 2014 - A fire and an explosion occurred at Iran's Parchin military site near Tehran. This explosives experimentation site has been linked to Iran's nuclear program.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has not been given access to the complex since 2005.
Analysts say the IAEA suspects Iran of experimenting with explosives capable of triggering a nuclear weapon at Parchin.
Six world powers are still trying to negotiate a permanent agreement with Iran over its nuclear ambitions. According to the IAEA, there has been an increase of activity at the Parchin facility, and Iran missed a missed a deadline to answer further questions about its nuclear plans.

Iran Nuclear Talks to Continue in New York

Sept. 4, 2014 - Discussions between the six "power group" nations (the U.S., the U.K., France, Germany, China and Russia) and Iran will continue on Sept. 18 in New York.
Iran and the six-nation group——are seeking to reach a comprehensive nuclear deal by Nov. 24 that would offer Tehran a time frame for reducing sanctions in exchange by Iran to curtail their future nuclear activities.
A temporary agreement last November essentially froze Iran's nuclear work in return for modest sanctions relief.

Iran nuclear talks: Envoys warn of big hurdles to deal

July 14, 2014 - Talks between major world powers and Iran over their nuclear program have not made significant progress as the process approaches its July 20 deadline.
An interim deal was reached last year. However, the parties have been unable to reach agreement on imposing long-term restrictions over Iran's uranium enrichment and plutonium production - processes that could yield material for nuclear warheads.

Iranian nuclear deal still is possible, but time is running out

Jul. 4, 2014 - With the July 20 deadline looming for talks between Iran and major world powers, it is still not known whether Iran will accept the terms that would keep their nuclear program active for power generation but block their ability to create nuclear weapons.
In this troubled world, the chance does not often arise to reach an agreement peacefully that will meet the essential and publicly expressed needs of all sides, make the world safer, ease regional tensions and enable greater prosperity.
Iran could make the right choice now, but will they?

Iran, P5+1 launch final push in ‘historic’ nuclear talks

July 3, 2014 - The five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany (P5+1) meet for the final series of talks about curtailing Iran's nuclear capabilities. The talks are considered "historical" because they may well determine the future of a Middle East in great chaos.
The United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany want Iran to reduce drastically in scope its nuclear activities in order to render any Iranian drive to assemble a weapon all but impossible.
The key aspect of this plan would be to slash the number of centrifuges available to enrich uranium from the current number of 20,000 to just a few hundred. Iran has so far rejected this reduction, claiming they will need even more centrifuges to build power plants.

Iranian hackers said to use Facebook to spy on Israelis

May 29, 2014 - Some 2,000 top-level Israeli politicians, diplomatic assistants and journalists have been duped during the past three years into providing secret information. There is strong evidence that the perpetrators, a group called "Newscaster," operate from Iran. The perpetrators have developed false but believable identities using social media. They claim to be journalists, defense contractors or governmental officials (not from Iran). They ask to be "friended" on Facebook, and at some point they are sent messages...
... directing them to links where they would be asked to provide personal information or enter a login and password (on the theory that most people use the same login/password for multiple sites).
The hackers were then able to load the victim’s system with spyware that could stealthily collect other passwords and sensitive information.

Apr. 19, 2014 - In Joel Rosenberg's 2009 non-fiction book, Inside the Revolution, he told of “MBBs,” Muslim Background Believers in Jesus. One example of the movement was Dr. Hormoz Shariat, who in 1979 had been a Shia Muslim shouting “Death to America!” on the streets of Tehran. He later became a Christian, along with his wife, and they started planting churches of Iranian believers. Eventually they founded a satellite TV ministry. Today, there are over one million Iranians who love Jesus Christ, and millions of other former Muslims throughout the Middle East, North Africa and central Asia who are celebrating the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Excerpts from

Connecting the Dots: A Handbook of Bible Prophecy

Pages 141-142
- The Aggressors of the War of Gog and Magog - Ezekiel 38:1-4

According to Ezekiel, an alliance of enemies will attack Israel in the End Times. The leader will be Gog of the land of Magog, who is the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal. He is assisted by Persia, Cush, Put, Gomer, Beth T ogarmah, and other nations. Most of these names are listed in the genealogies of Genesis 10. Gog is not listed in Genesis 10, but he is evidently the head of the land of Magog, who is mentioned as a son of Japheth, one of Noah's sons. It is known that Japheth traveled north from Mt. Ararat after the flood. Hesoid, a Greek writer of the 7th century BC, and contemporary of Ezekiel, identified Magog with the Scythians and southern Russia. Flavius Josephus, a 1st century Jewish historian said that Magogians were called "Scythians" by the Greeks. Philo, a 1st century Greek identified Magog with southern Russia.Commentators from the turn of this century and before have generally identified Gog and Magog with Russia even though, at the time, they could not explain why Russia would turn against God's people. They conjectured that perhaps the time would come when there would be animosity between Russia and Israel. Rosh ("head", "chief") sounds like Russia. Meshech sounds like Moscow or Mushkovi, the old name for Russia. Tubal sounds like Tobolsk.

- The Target: Israel - Ezekiel 38:2-12

This is the only time in history that this could be said of Israel, that they were brought back from many nations. It is true that they were brought back from Babylon and Persia in the Old Testament, but it is only since the Zionist movement, which began in the late 1800's, that Jewish people have returned from nations all over the world. They had been scattered abroad even in New Testament times. On the Day of Pentecost, for example, the various languages spoken by the Apostles, when the Holy Spirit came upon them, represented the many lands where they had settled. But they had not returned to stay. This really never happened until the amazing events that led to the rebirth of Israel in 1948. What thoughts would come into Russia's mind to make them want to attack Israel? A consideration of Russia's instability and the plans of some of their leaders for expansion throughout the Mediterranean area is given below. Israel has always been a key land bridge between Russia's allies and is presently an enemy of some of those allies. Any number of scenarios in the always-volatile Middle East politics could lead to a Russian attack in the future.

- Russia's Allies - Ezekiel 38:5-6

Persia is now known as Iran, and there is an amazingly close relationship now between Russia and Iran. Cush is Ethiopia, Put is Libya, Gomer and Beth Togarmah may well be Turkey and/or other Islamic nations like those once part of the Soviet Union.

It is interesting that Mizraim, the forefather of Egypt is apparently missing from this lineup. This, of course, fits the current world scene, with Egypt being the first Arab nation to make peace with Israel.

- Israel's Allies - Ezekiel 38:13

Israel's allies appear to be few and feeble. Some of Saudi Arabia was populated by Sheba and Dedan. The merchants of Tarshish could be England and English colonies. In that case, The United States could even be included since we were once an English colony. These allies ask why Russia and its allies are coming, but do not appear to deter them.

- The Outcome - Ezekiel 38:22

The quick end of this future war will be with God's judgment. It could be God's personal power, raining literal fire and brimstone, as in the days of Sodom, or it could be God using nation against nation, as he often did in the Old Testament, to precipitate a nuclear exchange.

And with pestilence and with blood I shall enter into judgment with him; and I shall rain on him, and on his troops, and on the many peoples who are with him, a torrential rain, with hailstones, fire, and brimstone. - Ezekiel 38:22 (NIV)

The next chapter of Ezekiel continues to give details of this great conflict. Again, it is a scene of utter destruction.

"And I shall strike your bow from your left hand, and dash down your arrows from your right hand. 4 "You shall fall on the mountains of Israel, you and all your troops, and the peoples who are with you; I shall give you as food to every kind of predatory bird and beast of the field. 5 "You will fall on the open field; for it is I who have spoken," declares the Lord GOD. 6 "And I shall send fire upon Magog and those who inhabit the coastlands in safety; and they will know that I am the LORD." - Ezekiel 39:3-6 (NIV)
