Syria, Iran issue first explicit warning to Israel if US attacks

Aug. 27, 2013 - Khalaf Muftah, a senior Syrian official, warned that if his country is attacked, they will consider Israel as the source of the aggression and will retaliate against them.

“We have strategic weapons and we’re capable of responding,” he said. “Normally the strategic weapons are aimed at Israel.” ... His words were echoed by Iranian officials, ...[who] said that if such a strike were to take place, Israel would suffer.

Four rockets fired at northern Israel

Aug. 22, 2013 - Four rockets fired from Lebanon struck northern Israel today. Several homes in the Nahariya area were damaged, but there are not yet any reports of casualties. Accordin to the Lebanese press, Israel retaliated, but the army denied those reports.

An Israeli Iron Dome battery intercepted one of the rockets. Israeli TV aired footage of minor damage caused by a fragment from the rocket that fell on the outskirts of a town

Turkish PM accuses Israel of engineering Egyptian coup

Aug. 20, 2013 - The ousting of President Morsi in Egypt, and the crack-down on the Muslim Brotherhood has caused a break in relations between Egypt and Turkey. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan claimed that Israel was behind the Egyptian military coup.

Erdogan said that his government could prove Israel’s involvement, and cited as evidence statements made during a 2011 meeting between a Jewish intellectual and the Turkish justice minister in France.

Last week, Istanbul protested against Egypt's military actions, and recalled its ambassador to Egypt. Egypt responded in kind, effectively cutting off diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Aug. 19, 2013 - Israel's Counter-Terrorism Bureau has issued a stern warning that terrorist organizations are planning to attack Jewish targets all over the world near the time of the observances of Rosh Hashanah (New Year), Yom Kippur and Sukkot festivals.

[It] also said that the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the US was likely to be “a favored period” for al-Qaeda and other global jihadist groups to attempt to carry out acts of terrorism.

Former MI chief Yadlin cautions over Iran's plutonium program

Aug. 9, 2013 - According to former Israeli Military Intelligence chief Amos Yadlin, Western negotiators tend to ignore the reality that Iran's uranium enrichment is only one of three aspects to their nuclear strategy. He wrote,

"A second dimension is Iran’s progress toward a quick 'breakout capability' through the stockpiling of large quantities of low-enriched uranium that could be further enriched rapidly to provide weapons-grade fuel."

The third option for Iran would be the production of plutonium. This path would allow Iran to build nuclear devices without detection. The heavy-water reactor they are building in Arak could become operational next year, enabling them to produce plutonium-fueled weapons.

Former IDF intel chief: US coming around to an Israeli strike on Iran

Aug. 7, 2013 - While Iran’s new president, Hasan Rouhani, calls for “serious” and swift talks with world powers about his country's nuclear program, Israel's former defense intelligence chief thinks that the U.S. is changing its opposition to an Israeli strike against Iran. Amos Yadlin said,

"If this is truly an overriding Israeli security interest, and you think you want to strike,’ then the light hasn’t changed to green, I think, but it’s definitely yellow.”

Yadlin was one of the eight pilots who conducted Operation Opera, which destroyed Iraq’s nuclear reactor at Osirak in 1981. He was also head of IDF’s Intelligence Directorate during the September 2007 strike against Syria’s fledgling nuclear program.

In April Yadlin predicted that Israel would have to make a decision on striking Iran by the summer of this year.

PM to push US for ‘more credible military option’ on Iran

July 13, 2013 - Israel's Prime Benjamin Netanyahu plans to try to convince the U.S. to revive the military option against Iran.

If this proves unsuccessful, Channel 2 reported, Netanyahu will have to decide whether to launch an attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities by this winter at latest, because after that... Israel’s window for military intervention will close.

Israel's new ambassador to the United States, Michael Oren, compared Netanyahu's situation similar to that of two former Israeli leaders, David Ben-Gurion - when he declared Israeli independence in 1948, and Prime Minister Levi Eshkol - when he preempted a concerted Arab attack on Israel by launching the 1967 war.

Photos suggest Saudis targeting Iran, Israel with ballistic missiles

July 11, 2013 - Military experts at IHS Jane's Intelligence Review say that new satellite photographs indicate that Saudi Arabia has deployed ballistic missiles that are pointed towards Israel and Iran.

The missiles are stored in an underground silo built into a rocky hillside. To the north of the facility are two circle-shaped launch pads, both with compass-style markings showing the precise direction that the launchers should fire in, according to the report

The missiles are older Chinese weapons from the 1980 that are not remotely-guided. They must be pointed in the direction of their target before firing.

Netanyahu said to have met secretly with Palestinian leaders

July 8, 2013 - Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been meeting with high-level Palestinian leaders including Ashraf al-Ajrami. the former PA minister for prisoners' affairs and Yasser Abed Rabbo, a top adviser to PA President Mahmoud Abbas. They have held direct secret negotiations in hopes of keeping the possibility of peace alive.

Ajrami also warned that unless diplomacy began to show results, ”we will go to war, with a lot of casualties.

Kerry delays Middle East trip to give Abbas more time

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry was supposed to arrive in Israel on Tuesday, but trip has been delayed, likely to next week, as Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas decides whether to drop preconditions for talks with Israel.

Syria naval base blast points to Israeli raid

July 9, 2013 - An attack on the Syrian naval base near the port of Latakia destroyed advanced Russian anti-ship missiles. A spokesman for the rebel forces there said that the attack must have been done by a foreign force - presumably Israel - "either by air raid or long-range missiles fired from boats in the Mediterranean,"

Israel has not confirmed or denied involvement. The Syrian government has not commented on the incident, beyond a state television report noting a "series of explosions" at the site.

The Israelis have have conducted raids at least three times this year to prevent the transfer of weapons to Hezbollah forces in Lebanon.

Battle rages over Golan Heights border crossing

Jun. 6, 2013 - Heavy fighting was reported at the Quneitra border crossing in the Golan Heights, which connects Syria with Israel.

The crossing was captured by the rebels in the early morning, according to a rebel spokesman, who said his organization inflicted “heavy losses” on government troops holding the crossing and were able to destroy four tanks.

Israel registered a complaint to the UN that Syria had violated the ceasefire agreement between the two countries by using tanks and armored personnel carriers in the de-militarized zone.

US spills Israeli missile defense secrets

Jun. 4, 2013 - In the process of inviting bids for a military construction project in Israel the US Federal Business Opportunities website inadvertantly revealed sensitive information about a proposed launch site for a future Israeli anti-ballistic missile system. The location, underground depth, thickness of the concrete, construction time-line, and diagrams for the installation were published.

The faux pas was originally highlighted by Jane’s Defence Weekly, an established and widely cited military publication. Jane’s notes that while the spilled information does not name the missile system for which launch site is being built, it is “almost certainly for the new Arrow 3.”

Israel is rushing to finish the project by 2015.

Iraq warns Israel against using its airspace to strike Iran

June 3, 2013 - Iraq's deputy prime minister, Hussein al-Shahristani, said that Iraq has warned Israel that "if they violate Iraqi airspace, they will have to bear the consequences." He also noted that the U.S. has already assured Iraq that they would not use Iraqi airspace to attack Iran's nuclear facilities. No explanation was given about what the consequences would be.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki is a Shi'ite who has increased economic ties and cooperation with Iran in recent years.

It has been known for some time that some Iraqi government officials are ignoring sanctions against Iran.

Iran's Arak reactor looms in Israeli, Western view

June 2, 2013 - Iran is pressing ahead toward completion of a second nuclear reactor, which they say will be used to produce isotopes for medical and agricultural use. The facility is the Arak heavy-water research plant which is located about 120 miles southwest of Tehran.

Israel, which has bombed such construction sites around the Middle East before, may try to stop the plant being completed. . .before it becomes operational - to avoid generating radioactive fallout

PM indicated to Putin: ‘We’ll destroy your missiles if you deliver them to Assad’

June 1, 2013 - Earlier this month Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited Russia and met with President Vladimir Putin.

Netanyahu called on Putin to cancel Russia’s transfer of the sophisticated anti-aircraft system to Syrian President Bashar Assad, and indicated that, should the delivery go ahead, Israel would strike the missiles before they became operational.

So far the weapons have not been delivered even though Syrian President Assad had claimed to have received some of them.

Netanyahu to spend another $350 million so every Israeli has gas mask

May 31, 2013 - Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has instructed government ministries to equip all of Israel’s residents with gas mask kits. The additional gas masks will cost the government approximately $350 million. He told the Emergency Economy Committee,

“We must prepare defensively and offensively for the new era of warfare. The state of Israel is the most threatened state in the world. Around us are tens of thousands of missiles and rockets that could hit our home front.”

Assad: First Russian missile shipment now in Syria

May 30, 2013 - Syrian President Bashar Assad told a Lebanese TV channel,

"Syria has received the first shipment of Russian anti-aircraft S-300 rockets. . .All our agreements with Russia will be implemented and parts of them have already been implemented."

Israel's defense chief, Moshe Yaalon, has already said that Israel was prepared to stop the delivery. The delivery could also have a negative effect on efforts to hold U.N.-sponsored talks with Syria's warring sides.

James Cartwright, United States Marine Corps(ret.) write an analysis published in the Atlantic this week entitled “Israeli or US Action Against Iran: Who Will Do It If It Must Be Done?” A summary of their findings is:

The Iranian nuclear program poses an existential threat to Israel but not to the US, and Jerusalem therefore has greater moral authority to strike nuclear sites in Iran.

Israel Strongly Warns Russia Against Giving Syria Missiles

May 29, 2013 - Russia has promised to provide Syria with their advanced S-300 long-range air defense missile systems. They would not say whether or not they have already sent some of the weapons to Israel, but Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon says they have not yet sent any of them.

"And I hope that they will not be sent," he said. But "if God forbid they do reach Syria, we will know what to do."

His comments are being interpreted as a rare implied threat to Russia. He fears that possession of the S-300s would upset the balance of power in the region. It is also conceivable that the weapons could be controlled by Hezbollah.

May 24, 2013 - Russia is sending supersonic anti-ship missiles to Syria. Israelis are concerned that Hezbollah forces from Lebanon could obtain the advanced weapons,, threatening the development of its newly-discovered offshore natural gas fields [Tamar and Leviathan].

The development of the two giant fields over the next few years is expected to not only supply Israel with enough gas to meet its own energy needs, but also turn the Jewish state into an energy exporter.

Palestinian negotiator: No talks unless Israel accepts ’67 lines, freezes settlements

May 27, 2013 - At a meeting at the Dead Sea in Jordan, Saeb Erekat, the chief negotiator for the Palestinian Authority said that peace talks could only resume if Israel ceased all settlement activity and openly declared that a future state of Palestine would be created on the 1967 lines with minor land swaps.

At the same meeting Israeli President Shimon Peres said that he was optimistic about efforts made by US Secretary of State John Kerry to restart negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians.

Recently more and more Palestinian leaders are saying that the time has past for that dream to become a reality. Instead, they think that the entire area should become a secular democratic state. “That is the fundamental problem in the peace process. . . The Palestinian side still views the Jewish state as fundamentally illegitimate. They’re talking about peace without the Jewish state, and won’t find in us a partner for that.”

Senate: US must back Israel in case of Iran strike

May 23, 2013 -

The Democratic-led Senate voted 99-0 ... on a resolution that the United States should support Israel if it were forced to defend itself from an Iranian nuclear threat. The measure also urged Obama to strengthen enforcement of existing sanctions on Iran.

Meanwhile, the US House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee approved legislation that would impose tighter sanctions on Iran to slow their development of nuclear weapons. There are already 340 co-sponsors of the bill in the Republican-controlled House. It is expected to pass easily when the 435 members of the House vote on it.

Former Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin mentioned that there was substantial disagreement in the government over the issue of a two-state solution. Livni answered,

"It is no secret that there are differences among government members over the Palestinian issue and what an agreement with them should look like, but the policy is negotiations based on two national states which will bring an end to the conflict."

Tens of thousands of Jerusalem Day celebrants, most of them teenagers, participated in this year’s annual march, which started in downtown Jerusalem, then circumnavigated the Old City before arriving at the Western Wall, via the Damascus Gate and the Arab Quarter.

Palestinian demonstrators chanted Islamist and Palestinian slogan sand threatened a nearby group of Israelis. Police dispersed the crowd and arrested 23 Palestinians.

Report: Syria to permit Palestinians to attack from Golan

May 7, 2013 - According to the Syrian daily Al Watan Syria will respond to recent Israeli air strikes by allowing Palestinian resistance factions to attack Israel across the border of the Golan Heights.

According to the report, the initiative was due to be discussed in upcoming meetings between Syria and Palestinian faction leaders, said Khalid Abd al-Majid, secretary- general of the Palestinian Popular Struggle Front.

'Israel hit Syria weapons transfer again'

May 5, 2013 - For the second time in two days Israel conducted an air strike to destroy Iranian Fateh-110 missiles that were in transit from Iran to Hezbollah. The attack shook Damascus with multiple explosions.

The target of Sunday's attack, according to Syrian media, was the same Jamraya military research center which was hit by Israel in January. Jamraya, on the northern approaches to Damascus, is just 15 km (10 miles) from the Lebanese border.

The officials said the attack took place early Friday and was aimed at sophisticated "game-changing" weapons, but not chemical arms. One official said the target was a shipment of advanced, long-range ground-to-ground missiles.

"...adjusted fuses to maximize its burrowing power, upgraded guidance systems to improve its precision and high-tech equipment intended to allow it to evade Iranian air defenses in order to reach and destroy the Fordow nuclear enrichment complex,"

Only the U.S. has the upgraded weapon. The implication is that Israel should not try to stop Iran's progress on their own.

Apr. 30, 2013 - Recently Israeli Air Force planes have conducted several mock raids over southern Lebanon and shot down a drone, presumably launched by Hezbollah with the support of Iran's Revolutionary Guard. In response, a top Iranian general warned Israel that any attack against Lebanon and Hezbollah would lead to Israel's destruction.

In an address in the southwestern Iranian city of Shahrekord, Brigadier General Mohammad Hossein Sepehr claimed that Iran now extends all the way to the Mediterranean coast, presumably an allusion to Tehran’s influence in Lebanon and Syria via its proxy Hezbollah.

Republicans urge Obama to enforce Syria 'red line,' oppose deploying troops

Apr. 29, 2013 - On NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Arizona Sen. John McCain called for President Obama to take action against Syria since it has apparently crossed the "red line" of using chemical weapons on its citizens twice in March.

He and fellow Hill lawmakers fear the chemical weapons could be more dangerous in the hands of U.S. enemies or those who might overthrow Assad. And he joined in calls for the United States to be part of an international force to safeguard the weapons.

McCain and other lawmakers interviewed on the Sunday programs said that we should definitely not send troops into Syria.

South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham agreed that the U.S. should safeguard the Syrian weapons without sending in a ground force, but warned that if we do not act soon, "The next bomb that goes off in America may not have nails and glass."

Apr. 24, 2013 - According to Maj. Gen. (res.) Amos Yadlin, a former head of Israel's Military Intelligence, the coming months will be a crucial period for international pressure to be applied to Iran.

Speaking at a security conference in Tel Aviv, Yadlin said that “for all intents and purposes, Iran has crossed Israel’s red line… in the summer, Iran will be a month or two away from deciding about a bomb.”

At the same conference, MK Tzachi Hanegbi, former intelligence and justice minister warned, "“it’s now or never ...the option of never does not exist.”

Syria has used chemical weapons, Israeli military says

Apr. 23, 2013 - Israeli Brig. Gen. Itai Brun told a security conference in Jerusalem that Syria has already been using chemical weapons against their own people.

"To the best of our professional understanding, the regime has made use of deadly chemical weapons against the rebels in a number of incidents in the past."

He said that sarin was the chemical, and photographs of victims show them foaming at the mouth and having other unspecified symptoms that would be caused by sarin.

He announced the sale to Israel of V-22 Osprey aircraft, refueling tankers, advanced radars for fighter jets and anti-air defense missiles.

Hagel, speaking at a joint press conference with Ya'alon, stated that the US was providing to Israel military equipment "that we have not given to any other country."

Ya'alon said that Israel prefers a diplomatic solution to the Iranian nuclear program, but that the IDF is prepared to defend itself by itself.

The Israeli high command decided to treat the five Qassam rockets fired at Shear Hanegev Wednesday, April 3, which were claimed by the Al Qaeda-affiliated Salafist “Jihad Brigades in Jerusalem.” as the opening salvo for this coordinated attack.

Israel has moved an An Iron Dome battery to the Israeli-Egyptian border north of Eilat.

Natural gas from Israel's recently discovered, sizable fields begins flowing

Apr. 1, 2013 - Israel's Energy Ministry announced that natural gas has begun to flow from their recently-discovered Tamar offshore field.

Tamar was discovered in 2009 and holds an estimated 8.5 trillion cubic feet of gas. Another field, known as Leviathan, is estimated to hold some 16 trillion cubic feet and is expected to go online in 2016.

The new gas fields are expected to supply Israel's domestic needs for the forseeable future and provide income by exporting gas to other countries.
